    Angry

How the $%!* do I stop my computer from prompting me to connect to the internet every frigging time I boot up my computer?!?

Its something to do with MS Visual Studio (I have version 6 Pro) I know, because it only appears after that's been installed. I have searched and searched through the components of MSVS6 Pro, and through the registry, and I can't find a thing that looks like it's prompting the connection!

PLEASE help, its not only me that's totally $%!*ed off with this, but my friend also.

    THANKYOU for any help!

    Harry.

Do you have a network drive that connects on reboot?

No, I don't. It brings up the dial-up networking connection prompt every time I start Windows. If I install everything on Visual Studio 6 then it comes up 3 times!!!

Doesn't this happen to anyone else? Is it just me and my friend who are cursed with this?

The only time I've ever had it happen is with a network drive that I've asked to be reconnected at startup. It almost sounds as though it's trying to create a connection to a network location for MSDN.

Just to let you know, it has nothing to do with MSDN.
I think it's somehow connected to Visual InterDev.
I remember when it happened to me (was i pi$$ed) i found it somwhere in the registry. But I can't remember though, it was kinda a long time ago.

    Good Luck

    Look in ...

    HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Have fun, and ensure to backup your registry first

There's nothing in there that looks likely to be it...

    I have:

    AudioHQ
    BlstApp (Creative Graphics card app)
    LoadPowerProfile
    POINTER
    ScanRegistry
    SystemTray
    TaskMonitor

Can you see anything that looks suspicious? I'll experiment a bit...

Sc0rp, does any of that look familiar?

    Talking Nope

When I found it, it wasn't in the Run key, it was somewhere in the key of Visual Studio.

    hmmm

Is it a Internet Connection Dialog or just a Network-Log-in form?
Maybe look in your Control Panel/Network, I had it one day with somethin' from Microsoft (Family?), just check if you find some login options, I found a few, hope it helps mate..

    Lightbulb Hey

There is a good chance it has to do with Internet Explorer 4-5, I know that IE has a stupid little connection box that will pop up when ever there is a program trying to access the internet, I know I had it all the time because Getright and ICQ and all that use to try and check for internet connectivity and it use to display the dialog for connection, Did you install IE 4 - 5 recently?

I especially noticed this after installing Office 2000 which asks (forces) you to install IE 5!

    Hope this helps!

Well, deleting EVERYTHING from that run key doesn't get rid of it. Whats really frustrating is that I have uninstalled MS Visual Studio, but it still comes up >

It's a dial-up networking prompt. It's the same one I get when I double click my dial-up networking connection icon. I don't have a local area network.

I haven't done anything with IE. I know its to do with Visual Studio because I've been formatting frequenntl recently and it only appears after I've installed MSVS.

I'll check my IE setting (again!) then, and also look for any remaining Visual Studio stuff in the registry. I've noticed some keys named 'Visual Basic 4' and 'Visual Basic 5' (I think it was 4 & 5, it was old versions anyway), so there's agood chance theres some annoying stuff in there still.

Thumbs down Still think your looking in the wrong place!

I have never had MSVS do that to me after installing it on like 4 PC's and like 10 Times on each, I really think IE would be the source of your problems, and maybe MSVS does try and access the internet at startup (for some reason) when you get into your computer right and cancel all the dialogs...

bring up IE then type in a address press enter and does the connection box appear?
another test would be to bring up ICQ or another program that uses the internet and see if the connection box pops up if so then (from memory) there is like a options button on the dialog if you go there you can tell it not to connect on request or something like that!

    I hope that helps

That dialog looks different, I'd recognise that one. It may be an Internet Exploror thing still, but why would installing Visual Studio change Internet Explorer?

I can assure you that it had something to do with installing MSVS, I too have installed it many times on different PCs and it always tries to connect on startup. One (bad) solution is to uninstall the modem (just the software), as it tries to connect to the default connection.

Come to think of it the default connection is the default for IE, so maybe it is something to do with IE. It is instigated by MSVS though.

Looking through the IE options, there is nothing relevant there. It must be a registry setting I guess. The fact that it still happens even though I uninstalled MSVS points to IE too.

    Ok
its simple, ur IE is configured to call internet connection when ever , it did not find and ip address, or address in ur pc.

Open IE. In tools menu chose "Internet options". In connections Tab, u will find three options

    Never Dial a connection
click on it or press alt+c

    and press ok
and try rebooting ur system again
    it wont come again

No, it's not that. I've tried that already. Several times. As stated in my previous posts.

I found out what it is!

For all those that share this plight with me, look in

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\OLE

and change the value of "EnableRemoteConnect" to "N".

It's something to do with OLE, there you go
