    How to make sprites?

    Have you seen that games that uses "sprites"? (i'm not sure if they are sprites but they are like
    this image
    and then you have another image with the same picture but without colors, it is all the background white and there is only a black thing with the shape of the image...
    how do you make that black thing???????
    and can somebody give me some tutorials on how to use this things???
