I need advice from y'all
I have my first Intranet assignment. I will be putting our company operations manual on line. Please give all of the advice you can on this project.
It is running on a Unix box so no asp

There is no question of Asp as ur using unix platform........if ur putting ur companies operations online so u can create static html pages............if u want to use database then the procedure is quite big and require either perl or php as a scripting language..........and u can use MySql as backend........so first decide what u want to do then may be we can help u a bit

If it can be done I would like to have the actual manual in pdf format. It must be searchable and fully indexed

Personally I hate PDF - I think it's one of the poorest presentation formats ever created. Compared to using web pages PDF is raw pain. Some like it though.
You could easily do up your documentation as a PDF document and just make one static HTML page with a link for downloading the document. I would hardly call it an intranet setup, but it could work that way. I can't speak for NS, but with IE PDF documents will load into the PDF viewer seamlessly from a web page.
