    Lightbulb Everyone make the Game

Hey all i am new to visual basic. But i really love computers and i love to mess with them. I am learning all there is as fast as my brain can hold it.

    But anyway
I was just thinking about programming a game the other day, i got the idea for it it would be a military style game you would be able to play it like the game warcraft were you had the map and your soldiers and a list of weapons and what not but you would also have the ability to go in and play in a first person view kinda like the new game for xbox halo. you would be able to have a large number of people play over the net and you could create huge armies and make alies and kill da bad guys but i know to program a game like that it wopuld take a lot of coding i was just woundering if there would be anyone interested in creating a game like that? Everyone who was interested could take on a different task in the game coding process and then the code could be combined for the finished product, i know that there would have to be some kind of standard for coding so it would all match up but that should not be to hard. then we could sell it and make some $$$ i know everyone likes that idea.

We could sell it on my internet store www.buy2easy.com --- oh yes and anouther thing if any of you game programmers want to sell your games i could sell it on my site for you for free, you know just hooking a fellow programmer up!

well everyone just let me know what you think of this idea

    c-ya when i c-ya

It would be tough but possible

well i am a fast learner i love to fool with computers and love to program

the only thing is is that getting the sprites for the soldiers i believe will be hard to find and personally i do not want to pay a graphics artist to do it so if anyone can find some soldier sprites then that would be great

    and another thing

personaly i would like to program the third person view of the soldiers. we would have to get someone else to do the 3d part that i mentioned cause i would probably screw that up. but if this game were created it would be one of a kind because i do not know of anouther game on the market that has the third person play like warcraft with the option to go in and play in a 3d world like halo, or doom or any game like that so it would definately be on the cutting edge!

I am great with comming up with ideas and stuff like that but my mind wants to program in ways that i have not yet learned to do if that makes any sence at all. It is like i have in my mind what the game will look like and i can draw it down on paper but i do not yet know enough about programming to write the entire program myself. you see i am in the last part of my second year of college and i am going into computer engeneering (software) so eventually i will have the skills but i do not want to wait.

Once agian if anyone else would be interested in helping then just post a reply telling your thoughts on this idea!
    Thanks and C-Ya

It has, actually, been done before. Dungeon Keeper 2 (perhaps the original, I dont know) had a spell which allowed you to take control of one of your minions, and control them from a first person viewpoint.

...learning how to program might be a bigger concern than sprites ^^

Hmmm, sounds like you've bitten off more than you can chew there.

Still, if you want a hand beta testing it then give me a shout - I don't have time to help with code or anything (I'm busy on my own project - Sentience... )

Would be hard for me to help, I could probably write some helper dlls (I know only C++).

I see two fundamental problems with your game:
    1) Provided you manage to write the game, "have a large number of people play over the net and you could create huge armies" will give you serious headaches with network performance.

    2) What you have here a basically two games mixed. Problems:
    a) I'm playing alone (no network) and go to first person sight. Who takes control meanwhile? It will probably cost me more than it helps.
    b) I'm playing over the net and command my soldiers to attack. But they don't obey! Why? They are currently controled by other players that just don't want to do what you say!

And you mentioned sprites. A game of this type and magnitude should be 3D, so sprites are not needed, rather 3D art.
Finally, are you sure VB is fast enough for huge armies AND network AND 3d AND...

oh come on... if you add this up:
3D Engine + 2D engine + Internet Play + Massive Multiplayer Support = Extremely Crappy Game | Years of Work | It's Never Comming Out

Secondly: You can't write control routines before anything. Don't they have to be aligned on a map? I suggest you make a pacman clone of it.

And C: It would be a real challenge switching from 2D to 3D, Dungeon Keeper just changes the camera position, it stays in 3D (and yes you could do that too) I think Alt-Tab is the fastest way there is.

Last: *cough* paying for servers *cough*

Really Last: It's not wrong to dream of things you can never realize (even if you are "going into computer engeneering", which doesn't make a difference, because they won't teach you anything about game programming. They'd prob. set you up with Pascal or something. You really have to learn it by yourself.)

    I'm out

    lol

Its not wrong to dream, but keep your feet on the ground and wake up. Its not like you read the book on Vb and you are ready not make something big. It takes years just to learn stuff that not in the book. I think C++ is better than VB for game making.

    Pascal is evil!!!!!!!! :

*"Vb and you are ready to make something big"

what a dumb computer....you want it to do one thing and it does something else

Why would you want a 2D engine for this? Why would the game be crappy with all of these features that you have mentioned? Years of work? Not really. And if someone wants it to come out bad enough, it will, no doubt, come out at some point.

And yes, C++ is far superior to VB in game making, and just about anything else, depending on the compiler you use.

Yeah, you shouldn't use VB for such a big program. If you want to learn game programming, then go to Digitech... a college devoted to game programming located in Washington state (U.S.). This college is nothing but game programming including: design, programming, animation, etc. Go there first, then think about it

"...and the ant shalt be crushed by the corporate giant..."

sounds a bit optimistic (mildly), but cut out like three-quarters of the features and you might be talking...say, just have an isometric game (strategy) like warcraft or ra2. that would take a lot of work, but at least it's possible with some cooperation. good luck, that's all i can say..
