I wouldn't even insinuate that it was being 'developed'. I view the Stargate Project as a large woolly mammoth, stampeding through Centrica. All us Business Analysts, Contractors and external companies are simply running next to it poking it with sticks in the vain attempt at guiding it where we want it to go.

    It seldom works.

    Nah. The fighting's too linear/predictable.

Probably because your alcohol intake went down. We used to drink loads at the Uni rugby club. That was one of the main reasons for joining.

The same club I was in hosted four of British Olympic Karate Squad, it had (and I beleive still has) an awesome reputation in its own discipline.

we often used to go head-to-head. Not ONCE did the Karate guys drop one of our boys. Not ONCE did they land a meaningful punch, let alone a kick powerful enough to do any damage.

An experienced boxer is far from linear, his fitness is invariably superior & a good boxer knows how to avoid his opponent & take the opportunity of gaps in defence offered by his opponents. That in itself makes a boxer far more effective.

An experienced boxer can kick the arse of an inexperienced boxer and watching two experienced boxers fight can often be awsome, but I still stand by my comment.

I have seen it from the other way round, a number of boxers were part of some of my martial arts classes and they concurred with the majority of what I say when applied to a 'real' fight.

Fighting in the ring is different to a real fight in that you're try not to damage your opponent too severely. On the street against a boxer, you wouldn't be throwing punches and kicks at the head/torso as you'd lose that kind of war of attrition if they're any good. You'd stay the hell out of the way and the first chance you get you take one of his kneecaps off.

Most aren't expecting this kind of horrific attack. Once they've only got one leg they can put their weight on you can simply walk away, or take them apart depending on what morals you have.

In the ring, the limitations imposed favour the boxer - out of the ring the martial artist generally has the advantage.

That said, boxers are generally of much higher physical standard than martial artists (of this country) and a good boxer is nothing like the lumbering hulk that most people imagine. A good boxer is frighteningly fast with their hands, and when they hit you - you know about it!

Just my observations based on experience...

Most styles of Karate are very linear in attack, very similar to boxing really. How exactly does a boxer defend a leg sweep? High kicks are very high commitment and not that hard to block/avoid/counter.

It might be a little different against a more flexible or internal style, like Aikido or Taijiquan. The big gloves must make things a bit strange.

Ever try it versus Muai Thai?

I was in a street fight once, got jumped by a few guys & ended up caught in a doorway of a shop, 2 guys at me very close up. Whereas my fitness from the boxing got the better of them, I certainly wasn't using my fists half as much as my knees & elbows !!

But, not all street fights are close up, that's where I stand by my comments too. Depends on the situation I reckon. Also, whatever disciplie you know, insitnctively, 'real' fights are way more frightening. That, at least with me was reflected upon what I did to get myself out/through it.

Keeps out of the way mostly, fends off using long jabs. Thats where karate loses out really, getting close enough physically to be effective. If they do though, the boxer has to be damn good with his uppercut or short hooks to survive.

    Is that Kick Boxing ?

If so, yes, Kick boxer's dont box per-say, they use karate style punches from the hip, flat from the body. Not effective at all. They fared much worse that the Karate boys. In addition, a few of them came along to learn boxing skills. Very tough to un-learn them the style they'd learned from Kick Boxing classes.

I reckon I'd be good at Judo. If I got a bit of fitness training and weight training in I could push my weight up to about 18 stone and then I would like to see someone throw me in the Judo ring

I tried boxing when I was about 11, I got punched in the face and it really hurt (then) so I gave up. What a ***** hey?
