    Server software

If you owned a server and had some spare cash what would you buy to run it?

    Windows 2000 Server?
    Novel NetWare?
Cold Fusion Server 4.5 Pro for Lunix?
    TurboCluster Server 4.0?

Im thinking about purchasing a server rather than running off my pc. Any suggestions?

It depends a lot on what you want to use it for. I've always found Linux to be cool. You can do a lot with it and rarely have to buy anything for it.

What's it going to be? Do you need it to serve as a file server or a internet server or both?

If you need a file server, it's easier to run windows 2000 especially if you need to set up a Primary Domain Controller. On the other hand it is possible to set up Linux to act as a file server for Windows if you Install Samba.

If you are just interested in the internet side of things, I think Linux really shines there, especially if you are looking at JSP and Java servlets.

Another consideration--if you have only used windows, you may not enjoy typing commands in the Unix shell. Personally, I like the shell because any command you can type, you can also automate into a script. And just about any command you can automate into a script, you can integrate into a web page.

Linux may be cool but it is very immature. I'd suggest either 2000 or pure Unix like Solaris. Parksie probably recommends Solaris as a server as well.

Ive always liked Unix. But ive found in the past that the setup and configuration process was a difficult one. I helped my friend set up BSD awhile ago and it was a real pain. Ive thought about running a server off of my pc using a "thin server". NetMax makes a preconfigured web server that runs on Lunix based on RedHat for $69.95

Everything else is so expensive though. Window 2000 server goes for about $800 Cold Fusion about $1000. And that's of course on top of the cost of the server. So im not quite sure if i want to go that far yet. But i will see.
