ppl i need your help! few days ago i posted a message about my comp rebooting itself.... it still does!!

few ppl told me that i might be power supply but it's not because when i run the Win in Safe Mode or if i leave my comp at the login screen it will never reboot.

as soon as i login, after a while, when all services start it just freaking reboots........ is it a virus? trojan? i don't know....

i even unplugged my comp from the net, and it still reboots. so it must be something local, dammit!!!

if anybody have any ideas on how to check or get rid of that thing please let me know

btw: i ran the latest McAfee software and it did not detect anything....

please help!!!!!!

try looking on cnet for a trojan remover or something, you'll probably find something there...

Good idea: download it on another computer 'cause some smart virii can detect anti-virus programs and "disable" it.

It doesn't have to be a virus. It could be bad drivers or something...maybe an app is messing up. It could be lots of things.

So if you log in and leave it sitting, it reboots? Or do you have to be doing something?

no, it will reboot as soon as i login:

i see login screen
i login
win loads all processes on startup as usual (firewall, morpheus, etc)
then it reboots

im lost

Will remove all the warez and pirate movies l have stored on your hard drive immediately.

Hmmm....sounds like a rebuild, or maybe something in your startup opps is corrupted and is forcing a reboot. Try getting in, going to Startup Options and removing things one at a time, till the problem resolves itself.

first, the question is, what program did you downloaded and ran before you got this problem...secondly, see if it's in the StartUp folder in your Start menu or go into msconfig and into start up options and see if that app is there, and disable it. Reason why I'm saying this because you never know if that program you downloaded is the reason why your computer is rebooting because what the programmer program it to do.

So can you start it up in SAFE MODE? If so, then its gotta be one of those things that activate or initialize on start up. BUT, Who Knows with Netscape?

To find out if its a driver/program problem, you can start your computer with a step-by-step option. It will ask if you want to load a spesific driver/program. This way you can load only one thing at a time to see if that was is causing the problem.

P.S. To get the step-by-step option press F8 before the OS starts.

fellas i am totally lost!

what i had to do is to scan that drive for trojans and crap. but i couldn't because i wasn't able to download anything since it dies right after login and all networking features are disabled in Safe Mode.

so yesterday i swap HDs, i had an old 4GB HD w/ Win2K loaded on it, so after swap i booted it and yes it works!!!!

so now, i connected it to my home LAN and mapped to the other comp on the LAN, i mapped to the C$ share. (where i previously downloaded Trojan Finder to)

okay i can see the files, yes i see that Setup executable and double click it and booooooom...... again (rebooted)

In Win2K, you can set windows to reboot whenever you get a blue screen instead showing it. It might be set that way by default, but I'm not sure.

I suspect you're actually getting stop errors (what they call blue screens in Win2K) and that's why the computer is rebooting.

I don't like to cry "virus" until most everything else is eliminated. I suspect some sort of hardware problem if you still had a reboot even under a different installation of windows on a different hard drive. Is there any hardware you most recently installed?

that auto-reboot checkbox is unchecked. and yes i installed 512MB RAM (2x256) a few weeks ago..... but problems started occuring few days ago.

Try downloading PC-Cillin 2000, it's brilliant at detecting and removing trojans, but remember to update it regularly

hmm..RAM?

When you put it in, were you replacing some other memory? If so, and if you still have the old memory, I suppose you could try changing it just to see if it still works. You could also try letting the BIOS run its really long checks when you start up to see if it finds any problems.

I recently had a problem with some memory. The problem didn't show up immediately, but I think it showed up within a week. Windows wouldn't boot. When I had the motherboard run the long checks on startup, it would detect that something's not right, but when it did the shorter test, it wouldn't detect any problems.

before i had: 128, 64, 64 = 256
and replaced it with: 128, 256, 256 = 640

and i will check that as soon as i get home, but i i bought the memory from crucial.com and i did specify the type of MB i got and stuff so i dont know if this is it...

now, did you think about that scenario i mentioned? the one about mapping to other comp's drive and clicking, i can't understard how is that possible. comp was just working fine with the swapped HD and just as i mapped and clicked it wend down....

is it possible that it got infected through mapping?

i wish somebody would expained it to me......

I would try having the motherboard run the longer self check before messing with the memory. The memory's probably ok, anyway, but I'm just checking.

As far as I know, you can't get a virus just from mapping the drive, but once you run a program, it could give you a virus.

I was actually getting ready to blame the network card, because mine was giving me problems until I switched it over to a different PCI slot. I don't remember what the problems were, tho. But it looks like your network card's been working fine for a long time with no problems, so that's probably not it.

ok, so you said you installed netscape last before this stuff happen...Netscape probly wasn't installed correctly so it keeps rebooting trying to update the drivers....so try uninstalling it and reinstall it and see what well happen

They may have some way stored it in your RAM's cache (if there is one

) or your cache on your motherboard, either way it looks like it isn't residing in your FATs or your HD...

The only place on the motherboard I know about with executable code is the BOIS code itself. A virus needs to infect executable code if it's gonna do anything.

The BIOS code is very specific to your machine. If a virus makes any changes to that, it's far more likely that your computer won't even boot.

Plus, it's not too easy for the virus to even get to change that. WinNT/2K/XP don't allow regular programs to directly access the hardware at all. Also, the BIOS code is stored in ROM, which isn't supposed to be writable anyway, though many motherboards come with Flash ROM, which can be written to, so you can upgrade the BIOS more easily.

The Chernobyl virus tried to write to the BIOS. When it did, your computer simply wouldn't boot up at all.

Have you downloaded any VB programs or samples. Sounds like to me it could be a program in your registry that starts with windows and automatically shuts down

Sometimes the BIOS conflicts with drivers. This happen to me with Radeon an dmy QDI BIOS. I would suggest that you update your BIOS.
