Chaqnged the content of this, potentially offensive....

Am I the only one to dislike the Beatles & McCartney in particular ???

I find the music, though deserving of it's place in history should perhaps, stay there ?????? Instead it gets rolled out again and again and again.....

    As for Mccartney, Well........

All I can say is Mull of Kintyre ?? Frog Chorus ? Oh yes, very 'brilliant' lyrically...

Well, perhaps it might if there wasn't so much sh*t around. People keep going back to it because it is so good.

I mean people listen to classical music like Mozart and Bethovan and they are centuries old.

The Beatles music being between 30 and 40 years old is pretty new compared to this.

And this thread is nothing to do with Paul McCartney so if you wish to diss it, do it elsewhere...

Mmmmmm. Would you say McCartney is clouding your opinion of the Beatles as a whole? He can be quite irritating...

I think you may be one of the few that don't rate the Beatles, but then again, I don't know what kind of music you like.

I get your point on maybe confining them to history. But the problem is that their music over 9 years covered so much ground, that you find yourself discovering different facets the more you listen. And it still sounds fresh. And it's addictive.

You listen to Revolver, and you hear the introduction of Indian music into Western Music. Tommorrow never Knows gives us the 4/4 deep drum beat, used in so much Electronic/Ambient music (eg Kruder & Dorfmeister) you hear today. Is also started Psychodelica.
They introduced synthesisers into music (Here comes the sun) - and it still sounds great. Multitrack anyone?

I get what you're saying Pee, and I also know that it's difficult to convince people that a particular type of music is something they should listen to and enjoy.

But the guy deserves a day of respect - music today wouldn't be as it is without crap like Octopuses Garden and Yellow submarine...

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying there's no good music around at the moment. What I mean is that the Beatles still sound as good, if not better, than most groups around today.

I was making the point to FATBOYPEE that it's not as if there's so much good music aroung that you wouldn't even want to dig up any of the old classics.

Completely agree the guy deserves respect today of all days...

Additionally, I also agree that the Beatles music is so varied & diverse in it's structure that it's safe to say that the music was a major influence in music and shaped some of what we hear today..

However, taken in context, musical competence, even assumed 'brilliance' to me doesn't warrant the idolatory status afforded to the band members.

Perhaps Mccartney is clouding my judgement, however it's also safe to say that, given the quality of the stuff he's produced solo, he cannot have been the greatest influence of the band.

What really bugs me is the way the same old tunes go around and around and around and get hailed as anthemic ??

Other influences include the Rolling Stones... Pink Floyd... Yes....Lou Reed... to name just a few... do we make gods of those guys ???? nah....

These arent my prefs... I like most music.... just needs a little bit of context when it comes to beatifying the Beatles thassall..

My musical tastes are V.Wide & varied, depends on my mood...

    Oldies..

Rolling Stones, Leonard Cohen.. Thin Lizzy, Genesis, The Who.. Straits..(earlier stuff)..

    Others:

LLoyd Cole (favourite artist) , U2.... The Jam, Style Council, Weller..... Undertones... (guess the era)...the usual suspects really...

When I was a boy with no kids I bought loads-a CD's (80's early 90's)...I'm just getting back into buying.... David Gray, Tracy Chapman, Macy Gray.... Paul Weller....

But I'm not averse to some country stuff these days, Wrecking Ball by Emmylou Harris is some album....

All depends on the mood.... not much into hip-hop or soul or dance etc......

hafta say, the one artist I usually roll back to is Cole.

I ond't think MacCartney was the greatest influence on the Beatles either. Yoko Ono had that ticket

You know, the media have got a lot to do with the idolosation of the Beatles. If it wasn't for the Gary Crowleys and NME journos of this world, the i think the Beatles would get less adoration, adn more respect for their achievements.

As for the Stones: Rock and Roll gods. They did what the Beatles couldn't do, which as raw, sexy rock and roll. But they weren't as influencial.
Pink Floyd and Lou Reed I agreed set standards, but when compared to the violent change in direction the Beatles gave Popular music, their accolades and adoration are colrrectly measure IMHO....

...and this trend is continuing. Artists that digress from the norm are followed and adored less and less. Take for example Beck. This guy shifted music onto another level. But I guarantee only 10% of the population will have even heard of him, never mind his music. The Beatles held every music fan captivated. EVERY fan. This is why they have cult status...

Ack no. Lets not fall into the trap of defining music as singles that get into the charts.

The only people that contribute to chart music (and sorry, but the artists you mentioned there are ALL chart musicians - yes, even Divine Comedy) are either pre-teen boyband lickers, or bored middle-aged housewives with carving for "a bit of Robbie" on a Wednesday morning...

There is SO much great music, from every genre, that you could listen to for the next 5 years and no-one would have heard of them, becasue they never made it to the charts.

    One Word: Amazon.

Their X-Referencing and Real Audion samples will redefine record buying (if it hasn't done so already). I get so deep into following threads of music, like Searching for reggae Dub and 2 hours later buying Cajun/HipHop fusion.

yep, you're right, all 'artiste's' I cited are charted.... thats' the only place I get to hear anything new these days.. little energy to do anything else !

It;s all down to personal taste as to wots good...

me ? I'm happy enough in the odd new album & stacks of nostalgia...

to make my top ten playables it has to be really good...

Call it nostalgic if you will but these include U2's latest offereing which really surprised me and stayed in my CD stack for a long time and of late, days-of-speed by Paul Weller, oldish stuff but acoustic, empathic & somewhat awesome in my humblest of opinions......

    Unhappy

This is terrible. I never knew anything with the cancer was going on, it was a suprise to me. He was truly one of the great musicians of our era.

First Ken Kesey, then George Harisson, I am scared.

    people people please

classics like floyd, zeppelin, stones (never really dug them), beatles will forever remain famous

newer bands, like guns'n'roses and nirvana were sheer brilliance (i know g'n'r are still 2gether, but slash left and they now suck)

and even nu bands can be good, slipknot, marilyn manson, stan'd, papa roach (well, sometimes), oasis, and of course, the band of the 90s, rage against the machine

but despite all that......hip hop remains the top dogg, IMHO

there is so much of it, and while there is cack like master p and the 504 boyz (that whole no limit scene is wack), but then u get class acts like chino xl, heltah skeltah, method man, jay z, dmx etc

and of course, the late greats: notorious b.i.g and 2pac

and there is so much **** that is hardly heard of, and its better than most mainstream stuff. for example, i like eminem and most of his stuff, now he is arguably the most popular rapper in the world (its coz he is white, dont even try and say otherwise) but there is so much unheard stuff which is better than him. like the aforementioned chino xl and heltah skeltah) and rass kass, afu-ra, dead prez, jeru tha damajah, del the funky homosapien (although he is gonna get mainstream coz of his work with gorillaz)...the list goes on

so u see, hip hop rocks i recommend u all check out stuff by the above mentioned artists

A sad day indeed. George deserves nothing but respect, if not for his music then for his other contributions to charity (first concert for Bangladesh) and his contributions to film and humor (Life of Brian and Time Bandits). He wrote one of the best love ballads the Beatles sang (Something). I personally loved the Traveling Wilburys too. He never took himself too seriously (unlike Paul) and he lived a good non-hypocritical life.

    He will be missed!

My favourite of George's songs has probably got to be "I want to tell you" (from Revolver).

Although I am not a fan of the Beatles I do fell a little sad today. I did not like the music but George did finance the Python films "The Life of Brian". Without him this would never had been made.

I also did not know how ill he was.

My sympathies go to all who new and loved him

    Agree completely Katie.

And this is not the only thing that I feel sad about today. Life is so unfair sometimes e.g.

Diane Pretty has lost the latest stage of her court battle to be allowed to end her life. She sufferes from Motor Neurone disease, she wants to die, but can't do so without her husbands assistance. But courts rule it is illegal, and he will be prosecuted if found helping with a suicide. She is in so much pain.

The schoolgirl who hit Prince Charles with a flower during his visit to Latvia has been charged with hooliganism.
Prosecutors in the Baltic state said on Thursday that Alina Lebedeva, 16, faces two years in jail if found guilty.

Did Prince Charles actually care when he got hit with that flower? He didn't look that bothered to me. I thought he'd spoken to the Latvian government or whoever to try to get them to let her off.
