initiating winsock in a network chat program.

I am creating a chat program to work between computers in a local network. I can get the winsock to connect to the remote machine. But unfortunatly it doesn't transmit any data at all. I use the bind method but I am not certain if I have missed a command. If you know the initiation proccess of a chat program in a network please help out. And give me the code if anybody have a project that I can look at I really appreciate it.
