I don't think mental arithmetic is very important attall.
Skill in the mechanics of arithmetical operations is all very well but, in my opinion, is besides the point of real maths.
I think western education systems provide too great an emphasis on the teaching of arithmatic.
Everything I say is either loose interpretation of dubious facts or idle speculation rooted in irrational sentiment.
