Palm computers - use 'em?

Hey all.

I've been doing some PalmOS related development recently, which has got my trying out a Palm V. Seems kinda nifty, what with the quick synching of data between Palm and desktop.

So, the question is, what do you think of them? I'm considering getting myself one, but I'm not really that certain if I'll find it as useful as I hope yet.

Ideas/opinions?

I've got a handheld with Palm OS on it. It's quite cool, I love that HotSynch thing, very groovy

If you like doing things on the move (playing games mainly ), then go for it

I wish I knew of a way to get 802.11b on my Palm. We've got a wireless network at school that some company put in as an "experiment."

you can just about get the M.A.M.E. emulator to run on the Palm OS.

If it's a fad, it's one that's been going on for at least 5 years.

It seems to me that laptops are convenient when you know for sure you need to do something with them when you take them with you, but they're a lot of hassle to take everywhere 'just in case'.

Palmtops seem like they fill that gap to me. Perhaps I'm missing something, since I haven't used them properly yet.

Btw, where do you get the PalmOS version of MAME? That sounds nifty

I have a ten year old HP 95lx, I would link you to a site but it's too old to even have a support site. It has this cool game called tigerfox,runs dos 3.3. Pretty good for a palmtop, it's easier to type than you'd think.

Over the last 2 years I've bought and used a HP Journada Handheld PC, a Psion MX5, a 700Mhz Laptop, and a Palm V.

The only one that has lasted the "Gaffer test" has been the Palm V, for the following reasons:

It's small
It's basic
It's quick
It has a long battery life (MAJORLY important)
It had bundels of free software available online
It can sync with Outlook and my desktop in seconds.

Psion is excellent, (great OS, software, and screen), but too big
Pocket PC was pants. Full stop.

Afroman, I can't possible see how you can say that laptops and handhelds could be interchangable - impossible....

When I am mobile..I never connect to internet or do some heavy work with a PDA. Palm is an overkill for me.

I use Oregon Scientific Echo PDA [PD293-512]


This one is really cute (credit card size) and has everything I require.
This is one of the cheapest and cost effective solution for me at $99.95 [approx. £67.74]
{ it was actually $85 something when I bought it }

It comes with a PC sync cradle.

And the batteries recharge when in the cradle which is really cool.
