On second thoughts now that Kovan has joined, I think it's better it's in Chit Chat.   
Kovan, the answer could be 1, 2 or 3.
In English, there is a saying: You cannot have an apple and eat it too. (OK, it's not about an apple, but what the heck!)
So if you take one apple, but don't eat it, you could have 3 apples. If you ate the apple that you take, you could have two apples. If you took an apple and ate the remaining two, you could have one apple.
And if I snatched the tray away from you before you picked up the first apple, you would have NONE!   
btw, I do get the jokes at times.
