Download my version of the DNA thingy. How I have mine set up, each number may have a creature associated with it. Then, each of those creatures would have certain compoments assoicated with it. You could also use the code as a binary number. Each bite (byte?, which ever is 2 hex digits (or 1)) respersents a componet section (arms, legs, head, ect) and then the value respents the vesion of that componet (for arms: human, robotic, machine gun). Now, I know those are sucky examples. By the way, this verson is coded from the previous versons, with modifications. (Such as there are 2 ways to chage the code, 1 place to read the code, 1 way to save/load codes.)

Gaming_World, Arb already said that he won't take code made by other people - so you're only wasting your time

I think Gaming is aware that I won't be using code within the Sentience main game, but he is (or was) working on an external map editor for it.
As soon as I get my arse in gear and send him what he wants he'll probably continue with that - and that will be his little baby, bundled with Sentience.
Besides, as he says, any coding is experience and he may wish to use anything in a future project of his own. If I've whipped the code then things could be awkward later on, especially if the project goes commercial.
Gaming,
Behemoth and I were discussing the map editor and have some info for you. I'll collate it and eMail/post it here in a readable form (drunken notes aren't so legible )
Also, I dowloaded your wotsit last night, but didn't get a chance to look at it. I'm also away from home tonight, so it'll probably be tomorrow before I get chance.
First thing Monday morning, I'll post some comments for you.
Thanks!

Dunno if you've checked the main Sentience thread recently, but if you read the post about the dual method of running Sentience (with or without DC's) you might find it works on your machine now.
Have a look and let me know.
Jotaf,
If you want to have a quick think about anything you'd like to see in the diplomacy section of Sentience...

Hum... let's see... I can't think of anything better than "ally/enemy" and "pay tribute"

well for infatration, stealing every thing you can share (technologys, resources, mechs, and maps), and possibly sabatosb (constrion, posser, deationation of a super-weapon in their base, ect.)

Com'on Arb, by saying "tributes" I meant that you could give anything you wanted to the other player (really )
And there isn't much you can do in the diplomacy screen anyway
Maybe you could include mass destruction wepons like nukes, ion cannons and weather storms
A "base infiltration" screen too would be cool
Another cool screen you could make would be the "hacks" screen, where you could hack into the enemies' systems and steal technologies, give wrong informations to their mechs (like "those turrets in the enemy's base aren't as powerful as we thought, attack them" ) , make a building or mech self-destruct, build things in the middle of nowhere, etc

Nuke is a little under-powered for this game.
EMP, no damage but disables all there stuff for xxx turns, emptys their batterys, ect.
The infiltration screen is also going include things like hacks. We were trying to come up with some ideas for that - I'll see if I can dig out the list and post it here - it might jog your creative talents...
Gaming,
What's sabotosb, constrion, posser?

I had another idea regarding diplomacy. When factions are "talking" it is possible to switch on a virus scanner, preventing transmission of viruses, but incurring the wrath of the other faction ("you dont trust me! war!") as an additional line of defence.
Ok, a comprehensive list of espionage / terrorism software / viruses.
Name : effect : relative tech level : diplomatic effect : prevention / cure
Armageddon : slow deterioration leading to eventual eradication of a faction : very high : atrocity? auto vendetta? : preventative software? no cure?
Shutdown : shuts an opposing factions production and research down : high : considerable anger : preventative software, hard reboot.
Steal Tech : does what it says on the tin : low / medium : annoyance (if noticed) : preventative software, no cure (once its gone its gone).
Steal Cash : see Steal Tech
Reroute Processing 1 : Steals buildings / units from opposing player (temporarily?) : considerable annoyance : preventative software, hard reboot.
Reroute Processing 2 : Uses opposing players processing points for own uses : annoyance (if noticed) : p.s / hard reboot / manual reroute.
etc
give me some more ideas...

Hum, yeah, they'd have to research it again
The kind of base infiltration I was sawying was... having a really small mech that doesn't appear in the radar, and can go into an enemy building... from there on, you can hack into their system more easily and do that sort of stuff; steal the building; or self-destruct it if you want (might be good for defenses and core buildings)

Arbiter I am sure than you know than a good game do not need a manual to install it...
Check the Game and Graphics thread - Icheb's confirmed what I thought was the case but couldn't prove myself. It's down to the machine Sentience is running on.
Sentience should run on any machine as long as it doesn't have loads of stuff running on it. Sentience is a bit memory hungry - probably due to shoddy programming.
But it does work!

Dude I can run Quake 3 without problem but not your game I am sure than you have excellent graphic and animation but if your game eat more ressource than Quake3 we have a problem
What you appear to be forgetting is that Quake3 was written over a period of years, by a team of top notch developers and support personnel with a large budget.
Sentience has taken 12 months of coding by myself alone, and graphics done by Behemoth.
They're not even in the same class so it's unfair to draw comparisons, but if you wish - I'll make a few.
The basic fact remains that I can run the game on my machines, many others can run the game on their machines and anyone can run the game on a machine that's had a fresh installation of windows 4+ (no matter how crap the machine is). Quake 3 won't run on anything less than a Cray.
If you can't run it on yours, it's down to the setup of your machine and the way it interacts with Sentience. I cannot take into account every possible machine variation, nor do I intend to try.
Quake3 was written in a couple of languages (C and Asm I think). Sentience was written in VB - hardly world reknowned for it's game creating capabilities.
The game, in its current stages, is provided free of charge on the condition that people who play it provide a little bit of feedback. I wasn't under the impression that Quake3 was free...
If people can't get it to work, I'll do my damndest to fix their problem, speaking to each person individually to fully understand the background of the fault. Do you get personal 1 to 1 support from the developers of Quake3, or do you get a premium rate number to call?
Basically, I've spent altogether too much time on a problem I can't duplicate and which only appears to occur on machine that people have tinkered with.
As far as I'm concerned the problem is a moot one. Sentience runs on a clean machine, which is pretty much all I can hope to achieve. I cannot take into account the setup of everyones machine in the whole world so I'm not even going to try.
If you can Sentience to work then good, enjoy a free game, if not - you've lost nothing. If you really, desperately want it to work - then clean your machine otherwise go and play Quake3.
Gentile or Jew,
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you...
Then I'm afraid you'll either have to clean your machine a bit (which is never a nice thing to do) or find a machine with a relatively fresh Windows install.
Sorry...

I will do a winter format in december This might help but I have my ressource is at 87% when I reboot ( 256meg ram ). Any way, Thx for trying to help me
My standard system resources is at about 12 %, thats after a day without warez, with warez i need to reboot a few times.
When i boot up it's only at 56 %...
So, arb, i didnt realise it it was this low till i had a look at it
Can this cause the problems with sentience ? (stupid question)
The main VB routine in Windows XP (The don't admit it, they wrote it in VB)
[vbcode]
Public Sub Windows_Load()
a = 1
b = 2
if not a + b = 2 then
goto crash
end if
