Linux question?

Is anyone using Linux there? i want to load RedHat Linux 6.0 on my machine and want some help. I am bored of windows 98 which crashes every two or three months.

Can anyone please help me? I wan to know about ease of operation and stability and difficulty during installation.

I have installed Red Hat Linux on another box of mine. And I have A couple pointers for ya:

• Know everything about your computer!
• Mandrake is definately easier than Red Hat (and it comes with some cool things. Like KDE and GNOME.)
• Be careful, the first time I tried installing it the program formatted my HD with out asking! So backup.

Is there VB available for Linux? The only thing I do with my PC is programming in VB and C++ and net surfng. So if it's available please let me know from where can I buy it.

I don't think Microsoft would want to release a version of Visual Basic for Linux. If you want to program in Linux, I think the only language you can use is Assembly or maybe C++.

Visual Basic isnt avaliable for linux, but almost all languages have a linux version.

I've never tried Linux...Is it better than Windows? What about the interface? Is it like Windows?

hmmm... the I-face is like windows...
and i hear it is much more stable.. and all the software distributed MUST have the source code, and it MUST be free.. I think.. I read somewhere that linux software must be free, and come with the source code(usually C, or C++)
my mandrake linux(the OS) even comes with the source code

Yeah, I have a copy of Red Hat linux 6.0. Heard that its extremly stable bu I don't know how to install it. I've heard that it's difficult to install than windows. But one thing I has over windows is it never crashes on silly thing you do on your PC like windows

Linux program doesn't *have* to come with the source (there are commercial apps available with which you don't get the source) but often it does come with the source since most of it is opensource projects...

Why do they distribute the source code with Linux? Couldn't somebody just modify it a bit and sell their own OS?

They distribute the code so people can modify it and give their version away. The only way the can sell it is if they burn it on to a cd and sell it for the price of the cd. Linux is illegal to sell.

No but say if they modify the source code so it's almost the same OS but different names everywhere. Linux would have no proof that the person used thier source code.

It doesn't matter who you buy linux from, it'll still be linux. That is, the kernel and most of the apps are the same, all that changes with the distributions is the installer, and the selection of stuff. You can build linux by downloading the kernel and all the rest seperately. And once you had done that you will have attained Guru status, and people will worship your abilities (and persistence!).

So I can d/l it for free? How come you can get it frr here but you have to pay around $60 to buy it?

because when you buy it, they have to burn it to the CD, burn the help files onto a CD, manuals, and it usually comes with some kind of support...
and your also paying for the advertising

You can download linux free from the vendor's web sites (at least, redhat, suse, and mandrake let you - I'm not sure about the others). They make their money selling it to you because it's easier (and sometimes cheaper) just to buy it on CD than spend DAYS downloading 600+ megs of Linux
For really cheap CDs, go to http://www.linuxemporium.com and you can buy it there for about £5 a CD (about $8.20 ... I'm not sure about dollars). UK users should be able to find someone with a copy of PC Plus May 2000 for Mandrake v7.0.

When you'll finish if you start downloading Linux (600Mb -700Mb) at 28.8kbps or 36.6kbps?

That's going to take a long time for me. I only have a 56.6K Modem. If I had a T3, I could get it in 13 seconds.
