    Talking

I have decided that i want to buy a new computer, and i think a laptop is the way to go for me, seeing as it will be a pain in the arse taking a desktop to uni with me.

I was just wondering if anyone out there knows a good place to start looking, or if any one can recommend a good brand, i know some of my friends have had major problems with their laptops.

My price range is roughly £1300. Obviously i would like the best one i can aford.

    Any views appreciated.

    Hello Iain

As You probably know there are hundreds of different brands to choose from but from my past experience you might want to check out the following.

DELL: dell tend to be the most reliable brand that I have used but also are normally a bit more expensive than the rest. But saying that the service you get with a Dell is normally second to none. With £1300 to spend you can get a faily descent one (p3, 128mb ram, 8gb HD).

TOSHIBA: tosh's have been around know since the jurasic period and continue to make pretty decent laptop's, with a service that is reasonable. The main downside with Tosh's, is that they come with that annoying nipple instead of a touch pad that takes a while to get used to.

COMPAQ: for value for money, the compaq range rates quite high but reliability is sometimes an issue with them

My main advice would be to buy from the manufacturer direct and avoid places like PC world like the plague. (I worked there for a year and service can be quite shite). Pick up a computer shopper for about £4 and you have got almost a 1000 pages of choice, but avoid small obscure companies as the service you get with them can be questionable.

    Hope this Helps

I know, but the hardware is a little unreliable when you most need it. The supports sucks.

Cheers for all the replies lads.

I have been looking into this, and i have decided against a laptop. Why? Because I am power hungry.

For about £1300 i can get an alright laptop, but i can get a storming desktop. It is a simple matter of sheer power wins over practacality.

Has anyone had any experince with Evesham.com? They seem to have some good deals at the price i am looking at, and i was just wondering if anyone had dealt with them?

Thanks again for all the replies.

    Regards.

    Cool Against Lap Tops?

I currently have a old dusty Compaq, 180, 24 megz of ram however cherish the hell out of it. I transfer files from work to home, work on the road, connect to any ethernet connection...library, school, work and then transfer the files from there to my home pc via cable. I even test software on it before I clutter my amd 2 450 at home. So it has its many advantages, I don't advice getting a state of the art one but one with a descent hardrive and your good to go!

PS - Thanks for the reply on my mail! I havn't tested out the coding yet because im at work but I will let you know if it worked. Thanks!

You bored, or do you just like bumping old threads? They make computers that are a litle bit better than they were 5 years ago, I would think.

Don't worry, I'll be starting this same thread in about 6 months when its time for my parents to get me a graduation present and I tell them I need a laptop for college.

Well, don't bump an old thread, or you'll ask them for a Pentium II with Windows 95 on it!
