    So the .NET framework is basically a runtime enviorment.....

    From what it sounds like. It's like the JRE for Java except the .NET
    runtime comes or will come with future Micro$oft OS's. Right????

    You got it right but it doesn't come with Windows XP, I still had to install the framework when I installed .net

    Ahhhh ok. I thought Micro$oft might have the .NET framework
    installed on future OS versions.

    I seriously doubt that, it's against the Microsoft policy to ship new functionality in service packs !!

    In Dan Appelmans book Moving to VB.Net.
    The thing is that the .Net Framework is suppose to replace COM/DCOM/COM+ in the future so Microsoft has to make sure Windows runs .Net

    Besides Microsoft has shipped new functionality in service packs before. Just look at all the upgrades to User32.dll and ComCtl32.dll that has camed out the last few years.

    An an other thing, when we're talking about Microsoft policy, .Net is a complete turn-around for Microsoft and it's previous policies.
    Since .Net is built on open standards like XML and SOAP which Microsoft never have done before.

    Yesterday I was on one of these half-day seminars that Microsoft had on .Net and they confirmed that the CLR will be shipped with Service Packs.
    We will also be able to package our applications with the CLR just as we do know with VB6 run-time files.
    Microsoft will support the CLR on every Windows plattform from Win98 and above. It will be available for Win95 as well but since Win95 is getting old it will not be tested and supported by Microsoft.
