    Angry Deletion of Threads

I am getting totally pissed of with Threads being deleted.
Today, one which didn't seem offensive (Afghan weather forcast) gets removed.

All I ask is that Threads are closed instead of being deleted, that way:
    a) The Thread will drift down the board
    b) If the Moderator who closed it was at fault then it can be easily reinstated.

Deletion of Threads should only be used in extreme circumstances IMO.

I'm not sure what was in that thread, but if it was deleted, it obviously had some offensive content in it. Closing threads is not an option if the material is offensive. If anything, it will make people more angry, because if they read material that offends them, they would want to reply to it. Since the thread is closed, and they cannot reply, they'll start a new thread, reference the old thread, and state their own opinion (which would probably be offensive too).

How about editing the offending post and warning the poster, rather than destroy the whole thread?

i think you should at least send a PM to tell them it's not appriate and give them a chance to delete it themselves (provided the user allows PM's). Then if it does get deleted, they'll know why.

The only kind of moderation that goes on seems to be deletion.
As Chris and SD say, there are other, less ruthless ways to go about moderation.

So, are you open for discussion on this subject or not?

I find it amusing that the very values that people fought world wars for, such as freedom of speech, democracy etc are the very values that are being denied here.

It seems to me that at soon as someone gets the slightest idea that they have more 'power' than someone else, they immediately begin to enforce their opinions on others.

A dictator is still a dictator no matter how grand or small the scale.

If the post is offensive, why should we notify the offender, and wait a day later for them to reply and erase the post themselves, when we can easily do that ourselves? The whole point of deleting the post is so that people who might be offended by it will not read it. The sooner, the better.

GOOD. I'm glad your for deleting offensive posts, instead of the
    Innocent thread containing said post.

Does it happen often? I don't think so. It seems to me entire threads are deleted, since it is easier than removing individual posts.

Fair enough. I am happy with this, but why delete whole threads for the sake of one or two posts?

offensiveness is a matter of opinion. I can see if someone is being personally attacked, but if the subject of the post itself
offends someone then they should not read it.

It would also help if the originator was told why the thread was deleted. I don't know what was considered offensive in it, especially when compared to the new Afghanistan marathon thread.

I'd quite like to know who did it as well, and why they didn't bother to inform me. As I said in the other thread on this subject, what the moderators did was just plain rude.

I am shocked! SD displaying a responsible attitude. Some one get a bottle of single malt into him immediatly.

Totally agree with SD's point of view.

They're not just being denied here on the forums. They're being denied everywhere.
