ummmmm....Saran Wrap.
I'm not joking, either. Througout history, the problem has not been to Find food or grow food, but to preserve food.
Saran Wrap serves as very good pointer to the food preservation industry.

If you do the wheel, make sure you mention that the pryamids of
Egypt and the Mayan peninsula were done without it.

Actually, Jimmy, you might just have hit the button.
Beer was probably the first preserved food source in the Tigris-
Euphrates region....and I'm not talking about the horse piss that
passes for beer in the US.
The first beer was thick, non-carbonated, and stayed "good"
(read: edible if you're REALLY hungry) a lot longer than anything
else in the region.
An EXCELLENT suggestion.

You people seem to have forgotten the printing press.
it advanced communication/literacy (obviously)/education and provoked ideas that changed to world forever. It also ended the dark ages.

I'm investigating that beer thing...if I can find enough evidence to support it, I might actually use that.
The teacher might get a little PO'd but the criteria for the project are:
1)The thing must be supported by lots of evidence
2)You have to convince the rest of the class that you are right, not them
3)The most convincing and memorable person wins.
I'd sure be quite memorable, I'm sure I could be convincing, but could I get enough evidence?... If anyone could get me some evidence that beer is the most important scientific development to mankind, that'd be cool.

My vote goes for the first tool, whatever it was.
If concepts, not physical objects are to be considered, perhaps it was the first trade (maybe food for a tool): The beginnings of cooperation between non relatives.
Once the above happened, the rest was almost inevitable.
