here is bush's speach for anyone interested:

Good evening. Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes, or in their offices; secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers; moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror.

The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing, have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness, and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed; our country is strong.

A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.

America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining.

Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature. And we responded with the best of America -- with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could.

Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C. to help with local rescue efforts.

Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured, and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks.

The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight, and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business, as well.

The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources of our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and to bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.

I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance.

America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world, and we stand together to win the war against terrorism. Tonight, I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened. And I pray they will be comforted by a power greater than any of us, spoken through the ages in Psalm 23: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me."

This is a day when all Americans from every walk of life unite in our resolve for justice and peace. America has stood down enemies before, and we will do so this time. None of us will ever forget this day. Yet, we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world.

Thank you. Good night, and God bless America.

Does anyone know for sure if the FAA ban is on all non-military flights? Is the USPS or FedEx allowed to fly? I assume they are letting fire and resuce teams fly.

Well, I suppose it's their job to try and do that.

Although as presidential speeches go, it came over quite well

I cringed when he quoted Psalms. I personally don't care if our President is Christian. But we need a united front, and this is not a religious state. This is not a nation where you have to choose between religion and state. As a result, we had Jews and Muslims die in New York City right along side of Christians.

Point is, with all the stupid religious undercurrent, we don't need to come off looking like a Christian state. We are not.

I dont think Bush has much choice about what he says in his speeches, he certainly isnt smart enought to write them himself.

Dont you think its strange that someone as thick as George Bush could become the most powerful person person in the world? I think the government needs someone in power who can be easily controlled and doesnt have too many thought of their own.

I also get the impression that Bush is looking forward to a war.

apparently so are many other americans. NBC did a survey and it said 92% of people that took the survey would be willing go to war over this if it is necissary. I have not yet formed my opinion on this. i have to find out more first.

If it is necessary, I preffer war. In a war we get the full support of every other nation on this planet save the few we war against.

There is no such thing as absolute truth and absolute right and wrong. Justice is only the Justice of Man, as served by the community. In a war, the international community will get a fair chance to help Justice.

If we do this alone, we run the risk of doing it wrong. We run the risk of lashing out against the wrong people.

Besides, which, if we have a war, I will only settle for a decisive war, one inwhich governments are dissolved, not left intact as in Iraq.

Travis - I agree with you totally on this one, apart from I'm not looking forward to a war between the US and someone else.

Partly the problem is that they don't even know WHO to wage war against.

That is the problem. This is not a time to be wrong. We need proof of who did this and with whose help. This proof needs to be presented to the world. I want there to be no question in anyone's mind. We can not afford to look like a hurt bully.

I hope so too. Some times the media releases info without knowing all the facts...but several stations have reported the same thing.

How can they identify the hijackers if they've been incinerated?

Tey've turned over the boston airport, looking for evidence even on the seats they sat on in the terminal. They also found a rental car with a flight manual that was written in arabic, bound to be many fingerprints etc.

They found a car in Boston with info in it. Weston Hotel is being stormed right now. Arrests are in progress...lots of people have turned in info. They fiends stayed in America to take flight training and someone who they stayed with turned them in. It is impossible to cover your tracks completely....even if your dead.

Guess what...one suspect is from Canada...could be related to our "friend" abdul.

Remember, this nation maintains a presumption of innocence. Just because you are arrested doesn't mean you are guilty. We are in no hurry to mess this up.

Les, so I exagerate a little, but what nation that can support us will not? Just the ones who helped or would've liked to help. And those who would've liked to have helped... well, they will get their chance.

They are not identifying the bodies. They are just pointing out the suspects amoung the passenger manifests.

I saw a thread somewhere that made a (brief??) mention of airport security. I couldn't figure out which thread it was, so I'm just throwing it in here:

Don't you think it's a little sad that a bunch of people armed with knives and airplane tickets managed to do all this? Of course, they planned it all out real well, but all they really needed to bring with them were their knives and their tickets. It's kinda scarey. I hope that whenever the flights resume, there will be much tighter security.

Apparently, planes used to have armed security people on them. (I think the news site called them armed marshalls or something like that) I think they need to bring them back and keep them.

they didn't threaten people with razor blades, they're not especially scary...unless one of them had a beard and was very attached to it, they concealed knifes
