The best way is to quit cold turkey. I did a few weeks ago, I'd been on 30 a day for 2 years, It peaks at about 36 hours, If you can do 3 days you're just about through the worst of it what do you smoke, I was on Marlboro' Reds and wouldn't smoke anything else because they tasted like air, I cracked after a week and took one drag and felt sick. It was like I never smoked before, I still need a *** occasionally but I'm OK now, it's worth it, I've saved nearly £200.

hehehehe...
you need a *** every now and then, heh, that sounds gay, I know european ppl say *** for a cigarette, but its still pretty funny...
and about quiting... I used to smoke,... yeah yeah i know I am young, but with all the stress(learning how to program in html, javascript and vb) thats all that relaxed me.....
now whenever I feel tense, I find the neerest pillow, or computer moniter, or neighbor , and beat the crap out of it....
hehe, it releives the tension.... and I love to beat the crap out of things......
it works for me.
also what kind of works.... I think of a relally happy place,
I think of a place with a computer with 2Gb ram, 60Gb HDD, 64Mb graphics card, kick ass sound card, 27" moniter, 3Ghz processor, etc etc...
with borland C++, Delphi, ASM, Pascal, Java, etc.. compilers...
and in this place, I know all of the above languages, I also have an IQ of 60000 and I am the best VB programmer in the world....
and this makes me feel much better... untill I leave this world, then I beat the crap out of something again......

and so forth.

1 Down.
One day down, just the rest of my life to go. Luckily work is not to stressful at the minute so i am not likely to be tempted to smoke.
Except when my bloody sister sparks up in front of me. As to an earlier question i was smoking Malboro Lights. That was from my last pathetic attempt to give up. I used to be on the benny hedgehogs, but decided that lights would be one step closer to giving up. *lol*.
Seeing as the advice in the leaflet says to do something else every time you want a ***, i have decided to have a beer. So in a couple of weeks time i will be an alcholic trying to give up beer.
Iain, thats with an i by the way!

Beer has been resposible for the complete halt of 23 of my attempts to quit before now, there is no greater unison than that of a beer and a ***, beware of beer my freind, beware.
Having said that you shouldn't have any problems giving up marlbobo' lights, they're horrible, yuk, chemicals disturbing the flavor, bleuurgh, air and synthetic tabbaco substitute, poo.
If it wasn't for this sentence I wouldn't have a signature at all.

I was smoking 1/2 pack to 1 pack a day ,more if I went out for a drink or two or three or.... ,for five years. I quit cold turkey 2 years ago and never had a smoke since.
How did I do it? This is what worked for me. As well some suggestions.
1. Stay away from people who smoke. Usually smokers socialize with other smokers. Hang a round with Non-smokers.
When taking breaks, drink water, juice, or softdrink. Start a new habit to replace your smoking habit.
2. DO NOT drink excessive of beer or alcohol. Infact stay away from it completely. Alcohol will breakdown your willpower with illogical thinking. This is a FACT.
3. Do not cheat. (Sorry Sam )One little smoke will lead you back to one little pack a day. Try to stay away from things that is asociated with smoking. Like coffee or tea , pubs or cafes, and other smoker's hangouts. Learn what triggers your craving for a cigarette, and avoid them. One big craving trigger, although not obvious, is talking with another people. When ever I was engaged in a conversation with someone, I tended to smoke more. So keep phone conversations short.
4. Do not carry money in your wallet. Stay as far as possible from stores that sell cigarettes.
5. Have family and friends to support you.
6. Keep yourself occupied. Sitting alone and doing nothing is the worst. You will constantly think about having a cigarette. This will slowly break your willpower. When I had nothing to do at home, I would go to sleep. (This saved me many times).
So there you go, try it.
When I quit, the first week was hard. My body was craving for nicotine. Once I got past that, I had to overcome my mind's need for a cigarette, which I am still fighting. That's right! After two years, I still think of having a cigarette. But I know I can count on myself not to spark one up.
Don't give up! and Good Luck!

Day Three.
It's day three and i still haven't had a ***. And its no thanks to these microtabs. i have only taken about 3 a day. One in the morning, becuase i always used to have a cigerette first thing in the morning. One in the middle of the day sometime, and one after dinner, because i always want a cigerette after a big meal.
Any way i just wanted to thank everybody for the wonderful support you have given me through this trying time.

Giving up is easy! I've done it lots of times!
I finally gave up 9 years ago.
Try using your lungs for somthing else eg. take up running you will realise how unfit you are.
When I gave up I went running every morning for the first 2 weeks and I used to get through vast quantites of chocolate whenever I had the urge to smoke.

Ok, just 2 quick points...
1. The best way to stop smoking is to never start.
2. If you must smoke, please, DO NOT EXHALE!!!

Ok, so I feel very strongly about not smoking and I have very good reasons...
1. At the age of 6 I developed asphma... because my dad smoked... and now I have to live with someone elses mistake for the rest of my life!!!!
2. For those of you that do smoke please note it is very rude to smoke in a resteraunt... or at least you should have better sence not too!!! Some of us that don't smoke would much rather breath clean air... AND THAT SHOULD BE IN THE CONSTITUTION AS FAR AS I AM CONCERENED!!! Yes I am well aware that there is air polution but can we at least minimize the contaminants inside public buildings!!!
3. Exactly who are we kidding by making smoking areas in a resteraunt... the smoke just drifts over anyway!!!
4. Think about those others that you are also hurting by smoking... many smokers fail to take it into account that second hand smoke still causes and raises the risk of lung cancer and other related diseases!!!
Ok, thats all I have to say about that right now, but I still have the right to defend against what affects me!

Here in Canada (I think in U.S too) it's now illegal to smoke in public areas. I'm glad they put this law up.
Hee's a question though, why can't the governemnt just illegalize cigerettes. In a democracy society, if the majority votes of something, it's usually accepted.

Suposedly if they illegalize cigarettes they will only become more popular... besides the government makes way too much money in taxes off of them anyhow!
and no there are still public restauraunts and some other places that you are allowed to smoke... I think the only thing they did do was to make it so that public places had the right to say you cannot smoke on there site... so the problem still remains...

so the governement is partially to blame for this.
I think they should also jack up the price by $1 or something.
Why would they become moe popular if they illiegalize it?

A few years back the Canadian government raised ciggerette taxes a few dollars, but that made smuggling skyrocket and the government ended up losing tax renenue so they dropped the taxes back down.

yeah, they're good arn't they.
on the question of banning people from smoking, I'm a great believer in smokers rights, I've heard that in California it's illegal to smoke in a bar!! what kind of a ridiculous Idea is that, People go to bars for one reason, to drink poison. (I like beer, don't wory but it is poison) and I'm not allowed a *** because you think it's bad for your health, a car gives out as much smoke as 200 cigarettes (just a wld estimate) were not banning cars are we.

We need cars in society though. Cigeretts are just plain unhealthy for you. There's no good cause to haveing them.

Well we dont necesarrily need cars. North Americans (like me) are just mostly selfish bastards. Consider the SUV filled with one person that drives into the city then back out into the suburbs everyday. If you've ever seen the thick haze that covers a city on warm summer days you'd understand what I mean.

Cars improve the quality of life, so do cigarettes, not smokers can argue all they like but needing a *** is needing a ***, and those of you who say smoking is an antisocial habit don't, I've made loads of freinds while I was out for a ***, if you ban smoking because of the smell you step on the slippary slope toward banning garlic and enforcing deoderant use. I'm in no way encoraging people to smoke, but people have as much if not more right to smoke as they do to tell someone not to smoke.

Now we get into the arguement about if ciggeretes and alcohol are legal, why isnt marijuanna? Or even harder drugs. What should people be able to decide for themselves and what should the government decreee you can and cannot do?

A man has a bit to much to drink, he gets in his car drives around the city centre at 100 miles per hour, crashes killing himself, all the passengers in his car and everyone in the car he smashed into.
If the same man had had a few joints that night, he wouldn't have gone anywhere, he'd of stayed in the font seat picking at the steering wheel trying to find out what colour the airbag is.

Yes, Second hand smoking harms more than smoking the actual cigerette, or *** or whatever you want to all it. Might i also add that you could get permate holes in your throat and will not be able to talk in smoking is a continous habit over the years.

Second hand smoke is very much exadurated. The fact is with all the stuff in the world that can hurt you, alchohol, caffine, sacherine, painkillers, car exhausts, dust, etc. second hand smoke just isn't that damaging.
Smoking is actually pleasant, otherwise nobody would spend money on cigars. If sombody wants to make their resteraunt non smoking, that's fine, smokers won't go there. But the Idea of making a law banning smoking in public places, or bars is ridiculous. The only reason stuff like this is passed is that it's the non smokers who make all the noise.

I agree with that second hand smoke is harmful and annoying. But people who smoke have as much right to pollute the air as people who drive cars. I personally don't like smoking in restaurants, but bars are where you go drink poision as Sam pointed out.

I'd agree that if I had to choose one over the other cars are probably more useful than cigarettes. But the basic point is the same, people who can't drive have to suffer because peole who wish to drive can. in my uni about 75% of the students smoke but just about all the buildings on campus are non smoking, this isn't fair on the smokers.

Maybe it's a hint that they should quit. It's harming the environment. At least with cars, the travelling balances out the environmental damage, whereas with cigerettes, there is no good point which balances it.
