Phantom of the Opera is bloody good. I love the overture

My five are, in no particular order:

DJ Shadow / Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze
Divine Comedy - A Secret History
    Queen - Sheer Heart Attack
Electric Light Orchestra - Out Of The Blue
Beatles - Live At The BBC
I refuse to tie my hands behind my back and hear somebody say "Bend Over, Boy, Because You Have It Coming To You".

I don't really have absolute favourites, but among them would be:

    Deftones - Around the Fur
Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
    Slayer - Diabolus in Musica
    Static-X - Wisconsin Death Trip

I like a lot of different kinds of stuff though, not just metal.

Pantera is good (Cowboys from hell and Vulgar display)
    anything after that is crappy.

Each style of music is an aquired taste. Except pop I guess, which is meant to be easily accessible for commercial reasons. Metal is no different, you can listen to it on one level and just hear 4 people (or however many) playing 4 different songs at different speeds, and consider it 'just noise' or you can take the time to appreciate the reasons the artists are writing it, or find things in it that mean something to you on a personal level. Usually it's something to do with aggression and violence but not always.

The same goes for all different kinds of music, and for that matter all different kinds of art. Still, it can take effort and in the end you can often still just not like it.

Anyway, getting back on topic (sorry) I like at least a little out of a lot of different styles. Rap, rock, jazz, classical, indie, dance, etc... I like some out of each of them. I just like more out of some genres than others.

Just as an example - I've always liked Montagues and Capulets (Proviakev?) a lot.

    Lightbulb Musical Appreciation

I think different types of music need to be appreciated at different levels.

For example, Once upon a time, I couldn't stand dance music. That was until I openned my mind and realised that you're not supposed to get the same sort of pleasure out of it as you do, say, rock music.

I am still trying to find at what level I must be at to enjoy metal music.

Probably my problem is that I hardly ever listen to lyrics. Practically all my musical pleasure is derived from the music itself (the singer just being another instrument).

    Angry Rage!

It helps if you have some inner rage
I guess I'm too old for that now. If I didn't have enough inner rage when I was 17, what chance have I got now (at 27)?

Still, I don't think I'll lose too much sleep at not being able to appreciate Heavy Metal; It's not like there isn't any other good music out there, is it?

Indeed that is true, but then again what if you had never taken the time to acquire a taste for beer? It's a strange, bitter substance that is essentially a mild poison. When you learn to appreciate it, though, it's hard to beat.

Anyway I'm not trying to convert you to metal or anything although maybe if it was more popular there'd be less music of the likes of Steps and S Club 7 on TV and the radio.

first off 27 is not old. Im 28. When i cant control my bladder
and i keep ****ting in my pants then i will be old. But until then...

second not all "Heavy Metal" is infused with this rage as you so
call it. Yes of course if your talking about Slayer, Sepultura, CoalChamber or other bands of that nature but i dont here rage when i listen to DefLeppard do you?

Exactlty, not all metal is rageful. American Hi Fi calls themselves a metal band and do they sound like doped out lunatices? No. (Although I do usually enjoy the music doped out lunatics produce) Anyways, I don't generally segregate the different kinds of rock. Metal, punk, alternative, it's all good!

There are only two kinds of music that I refuse to listen to. The first is pop because pop is just the stuff that was too damn weak to make it into any other catergory. The second is country because I think that most of 'em are alcoholic hillbillies that have no musical talent...I can't even understand what they're saying. Sorry if I offend anyone (that chances are quite high) but that's how I feel.

Metal just doesn't move me. That's all there is to it. I have found the time to appreciate many types of music that are very uncommercial, indeed, music forms a big part of my life. I just can't dig metal.

Hey, I never said it was filled with rage. That was Harry. Well, he said that it helped if you have some inner rage to appreciate it.

That's fair enough, personally I like WDT much better than B&W. Maybe it will grow on me. I prefer Deftones' Around the Fur to White Pony though, although many think White Pony is a better album. Maybe it just takes me a while to get to like new stuff from a band.
