Attaching files doesn't appear to work in Firefox

I spent a long time trying to attach a bas module to a post in the CodeBank, but it never worked. I was using Firefox, and even after disabling all add-ons it still never worked.

Finally in desperation I tried Edge. At first it failed, but on the second try it finally worked.

Apparently the new download manager brings up a popup window? That's an issue for Firefox, which doesn't like popups in general. (I haven't seen any popup from any site in years.) It replaces the current window (with the post you're writing or editing) with the contents of the popup, displayed as a regular page in the browser tab. Further, for this full browser non-popup version of that popup, the "Select Inline" and "Done" buttons don't do anything.

Meaning when I try to attach a file using Firefox, I am physically unable to do so AND it throws away whatever post I've been writing that I wanted to attach something to.

How did you try to attach?
I just used the Manage Attachment button on the "Go Advance" reply, and it appears to have worked fine.
I've been using Firefox all along, and Firefox says it is up to date (46.01) on this machine (which is a Lenovo laptop with Windows 10 on it).

Perhaps you've made some optional selection some years back that causes the issue.
Perhaps reset the options back to the default values to see what that does.

I just picked an existing zip file on this machine (which there are not a lot since it is relatively new machine and I don't normally use it to develop anything), but there were some zip files in an old VB6 directory that was obviously copied to this machine at some point.

Well, hmmm. I definitely prefer your old-style download interface (showing at the bottom of the post with a download count) to the inline version I ended up using. How do I do it that way instead?

I went to Go Advanced, and then clicked the "Insert Attachment" button.

That doesn't happen for me, so it seems to be due to your options... go to Options, then Content, and there is a "Block Popups" tickbox.

Mine isn't ticked, but I'm assuming yours is. There is an Exceptions box, which allows you to specify which site(s) should be allowed to show them.

Adding an exception for vbforums.com doesn't appear to do anything. The attachment dialog still replaces the current page, which is the forum reply I'm trying to attach to. Same results as the video above.

EDIT: Unchecking the box entirely, so that popups aren't blocked at all, similarly has no effect. Same results as the video.

My Firefox is version 44.0.2, and sadly the About dialog says it's up to date.

I would guess that you have another addon of some sort which also does something to alter popup behaviour, perhaps TabMixPlus (on the "Links" tab of the options) or similar.

Have you tried scrolling down, and using the "Manage Attachments" button? It isn't set up the same way, so the behaviour may well be different for you.

Trying it just now, it brings up the same thing as that toolbar button, so the same issues.

I did figure out how to switch the attachment style. Using Edge (so the popup works) I selected the attachment and then removed it with the "Inline" button so that it was just a normal attachment associated with the post, then I removed the inline BBCodes from the post proper and now it shows up how I prefer.

I can live with Edge managing my attachments for the time being. Meanwhile, clearly my Firefox has something weird going on with it since it won't update properly. I'm thinking I need to trash the program and re-install fresh.

I keep AppData\Roaming\Firefox backed up; it's my understanding that all the good stuff is there. AppData\Local\Firefox can safely be deleted, yes? That's just for stuff like cache and pending updates, right?

User Settings->General Settings-> Enhanced Attachment Uploading:

Set that to OFF to get the older but effective basic function.

I'm not sure... I recommend backing up everything to be safe (including any locations specified in the options, eg: I keep my profile folder elsewhere), then you can check when you restore it.
