    Messed up Pop-Over ad

The CA Technologies add with the guy covered in post-its is showing up EVERY time I navigate. I understand those were set to pop up periodically, but right now the period is 1, which isn't right.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

I'll report this to our ad team.

It actually isn't always a time period. Some times our ad people set these to a maximum number of times per day. If it is ever more than 3 times in a row in a session, let me know. I try to keep them at 1 time per session at most, but I don't get to make the rules. When it hits 3 times, I figure I can start grumbling a bit....

I noticed that last night... I thought it was just me because I was using the back button, by the time I realized that wasn't the issue, I was done so I simply logged off.

I'm not seeing a cap on the welcome ad. Is everyone still getting the pop-up ('welcome') ad each time they refresh a page? Let me know please.

    Thanks!

Yeah, it's happening again for me... inside threads, it isn't showing... but it shows in my subscripptions list, searches, forums lists... weird... all day it was fine... only difference is the device I'm on... using a Chromebook here.

As far as I know... I haven't actively turned them off... I can try again a little later this morning with the Chromebook and see what happens. I'm now on Win7 64-bit with Chrome browser, and no ad ... and Chrome is synched, so the settings of one should be the settings of the other.

I have seen the add, but only sporadically. I did get it a couple times in a row, yesterday, but then it didn't come back at all. I don't think I've seen it today.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

Me too. Our ad team did a review of everything on our side and believes it is possibly a browser cookie issue on the user (your/my) part. They have a cap set (I believe of 1).

Edit: Could be a site caching issue; however, we did a push to refresh cache, plus forums tend to be dynamic (and less impacted by caching issues).

If you get it less than 3 times in a session, then I tend to not complain. If you get it a fourth time in one session, let me/us know. Generally, the cap is set at 1 time.

Yeah, I don't usually notice it until about the 4th time... that seems to be about my tolerance threshold, so if it's more than that, I'll be sure to let you know.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

It seems that over the last few days it has popped up on me every time I navigate. I have saw it at least 6 times in a row this morning.
Same thing is happening on CodeGuru. I just went there, navigated 5 times, got the popup 5 times.

    It is extremely annoying

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

All 6 navigations that I've made so far on the page have had that popup just now.

Poorly implemented - apparently not production ready.

Is it because I've got two tabs open for vbforums?

Nope - I closed the second tab - returning to this tab - and each navigation re-applied the same ad.

I just got it 4 times in a row...

Funny thing is they are pushing for agile when apparently all they have mastered is luddite...

Makes you NOT want to look into CA...

    Bad ad - they lost!

here's another laugh - CT DMV just canceled the third phase of new software supplied by 3M (they are the tape people - maybe all they had was tape and chewing gum!)

Couldn't write an app to register cars - what's up with that? We could write that here with just Sitten and JMC!

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

Not I... it seems to be only that one ad. I don't know if it's related or not, but I noticed that when I get them over and over, I am also getting the CA ad in the right col at the same time. Correlation isn't causation but, it just struck me as odd and I wondered if maybe the column ad causes the popup ad. I doubt it, but I'll look to see if the ad is in both places the next time it happens.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

Thanks Tech. The column ad doesn't cause the welcome (pop-up) ad. The loading of the page is the trigger for the welcome ad, which again should have a limit of 1 per session set by cookies on your system. Having said that, good observation. Maybe something about the ad is overwriting the cookie....

I also see the ad in the right col at the same time - not that I've checked and checked each time, but I had also noticed that.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

Over the last few days I have noticed that when I come to this site in the mornings I get this popup every time I navigate anywhere within the site.
In the evenings I have not been seeing it popup at all.

I thought maybe I could stop it by closing my browser and coming back but nope still popping up. Tried waiting a while but still there.

I generally come to this site and browse the posts while I drink my morning coffee but this popup is really getting under my skin now to the point that I am less likely to log in and much less likely to view more than one or two threads.

This really needs to be fixed, I can't even count how many times I have had to close that popup over the last week or so.

I agree - it's causing me to stop after doing maybe 2 threads from just the frustration of it...

Do the people who made this ad think they fixed it??

It's on a 24 hour "timer" I believe... that's why I always get it at home on my chromebook... that's where I am in the evenings. That was the first place I encountered it in that time frame, so that's when it shows.

As a side note, it showed 4 times last night then went away.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

THANK YOU. I absolutely NEED you guys to KEEP saying when this happens. I need EVERYONE that has it happen to post a simple post that says - "I saw the pop-up more than 3 times in one session" or something similar.

I can say it is happening to me, but that isn't enough to get attention on issues. I need you guys to inform me so I can use that to push the issue. Three Power Posters commenting at once time is a HUGE help for me.

    THANKS!!!

I'll talk to the ad and dev guys now. (again)

    Brad!

Edit: you can always say more than what I said above. Simply put, I just need the feedback on the issue from you guys to use as ammo for figuring out the issue.)

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

My third time on the site today and now I am not getting the pop up. The previous two times today it popped up every time I navigated which was more than 3 times in a row on both occasions before I finally just closed the browser.

Another thing I have noticed that you may find interesting is that when this site shows the popup over and over if I go to codeguru the same thing happens there. So after being on here twice already and getting multiple popups this time there are none so I log onto codeguru for the first time today and am not seeing it there.

Whatever the issue is it appears to be linked and effecting both sites the same way.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

Yep - it is on both Codeguru (the entire site/forum) and here. The ad team took the ad down. I've asked if they could run an older house welcome ad here so we can see if it works right (show once and then not again). If they are willing to do that, then we will quickly know if the issue was ad-based or site/code based.....

    Thanks again.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

The really weird thing about this popup issue is that I don't see them here at all or at CodeG ... On the other hand, two other sister sites have had the same problem... <<<GO Figure>>>

Brad, I wonder if we need to track which browsers are being used? I also wonder if people here with issues are using multi computers.

The issue at SysOpt seems to only happen on my home pc w/Chrome & Win 10... At the office I use Chrome & Win 7.

We should start tracking a little more specific. Having said that, the ad was turned off here and on CodeGuru until we can figure a bit more about the issue.

    Re: Messed up Pop-Over ad

    Two systems:
Win 7 (not sure what service pack) using Chrome browser (latest version)
Chromebook (latest build - in fact it updated two days ago) also using Chrome browser (also latest version)

Bookmarks are shared. Cookies are on. History, cache and cookies are NOT shared. Only bookmarks are.

The Win7 computer is my work laptop which I use most of the day between 7am and 5pm
After 6pm I'm usually on the Chromebook. The ad usually shows up sometime after 9 or 10pm. It will show until about midnight, or whenever I knock off for the night.
I've never gotten the ad on the work computer that I can remember.

    Hope that helps.
