The DB file for this message board must be huge!
I was just thinking... man the datafiles for this entire message board must be freakin' huge! I'm glad it's here though... I wouldn't have been able to make my program without it (I couldn't imagine the pre-interent days of programming, wow you might actually have to read a book, arghh!)

640KB, which was the reason behind the memory limit on DOS 6-.
So, VB World is serving PHP 4.0.6 with Apache 1.3.20 from Linux? VB doesn't come in to play anywhere? Shouldn't this be a sign that VB is for hobby only?

Sorry, Adam, but Dennis is right. VB sucks (read: not meant for any use as anything other than a hobbyist's language), and that is what I was hinting at.
Port this site to ASP/VBScript (presummably with SQL and W2K)? Uhm... no. Though I would like to see the two platforms run side by side just so everyone can see which one is better (and cheaper).

I'm sick of arses hanging around this site pretending they are better than the rest of us. Christ get a life, or f**k off to a NON VB site.

anyway, I wasn't really serious when I said that, it's just Adam pissed me off when he just said *sigh*. I'm not quite sure what he meant by it, but it surely wasn't meant to be a nice 'comment'. I kind of assumed that he meant "Why bother?"...
VB is slow, requires large runtimes, and makes learning any other languages very hard.
C++ on the other hand is fast, requires no run times, and if you understand C++ nearly any other language will make sense to you.
I won't say that C++ is better than VB, although that is what I think.

Well, why is there no VB in this site at all?
It is hosted from a platform that does not have a VB compilier. It is hosted from a web server that was not written in VB, using a DB that was not written in VB with server-side and client-side scripting languages that are in no way related to VB.
I'm guessing VB isn't up to the task. To quote an otherwise unremarkable quasi-celebrity:
You don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the Lone Ranger, and you don't make retail or mission critical applications with VB.
I don't mind VB when it is used within its limitations. I don't mind Windows when it is used within its limitations.

Okay, I'll be quiet. But VB presents so many oppurtunities. Besides, there are a lot of people out there to blindly follow. If you have honestly evaluated the field and you want to use VB to make a web server, go right ahead. But if you are on of those who's only arguement is, "So many people are using it, it must be good," well... I have no mercy for you.

I was thinking "why bother?" An argument with a pretentious Linux fanatic would be pointless, because you have a very narrow-minded opinion thereof. You, and so many others like you, have the opinion that Windows always crashes, Microsoft can't make good stuff, Windows programmers are newbies, and only hardcore Linux programmers are "for real." There's really little anyone can do to change your mind about all of this, so: why bother?

Stop arguing over such a stupid thing! Almost all of you came to this site for one reason: you knew VB. It doesn't matter if you think VB sucks or that C++ sucks.

Well, not that it matters, because he didn't use FORTRAN, but that has a place, too. But C/C++ were used to write Apache, the OS, and probably the PHP handlers.

Likewise, one would not set out to make a Web server out of VB. You *could*, but you could also make a Web server out of Pascal or Fortran or Cobol, or the TI-83 language. Everything has its purpose, and it's incredibly naïve, presumtuous, and insulting to say that VB sucks, it has no purpose, VB programmers are useless, simply because you find something for which VB is not currently suited.

As to Perl, Chris (and the slow pitch over the plate), PHP is based heavily on Perl. This site could've just as easily have been hosted with Perl, embPerl, Mason, or Perl/CGI.
But just because something isn't present, doesn't mean it is ****, it just means it has limits, and people need to know those limits. I would not recommend COBOL for web serving. It may have its place (still). I would not recommend VB for web serving. It has it's place. If I could just convince my client of that, then they will still have a product in 3-5 years.
I wouldn't say VB is ****, I would just say it has it's place. If everyone remembers that, then I'm happy.

For what is VB suited? My answer is, hobby programming. Programming for one's self or one's friends. I do not see VB as suited for mission critical or retail applications. Sorry. I agree with you 100% about suitability for a purpose. And that is what I said to start with.

John chose to make his product in PHP, that doesn't really constitute "treachery," or anything. PHP is a very powerful language, and useful tool (as far as scripting is concerned), and he chose to write vBulletin therewith. Also, more people use PHP/MySQL than ASP and SQL Server, so he'd be able to sell it to a broader range of people.
What *would* fit that phrase would be if Microsoft made its site in PHP.
As to Perl, Chris (and the slow pitch over the plate), PHP is based heavily on Perl. This site could've just as easily have been hosted with Perl, embPerl, Mason, or Perl/CGI.
