    ohh these viruses

I am using norton antivirus 2001 and when I ran the virus scanner, it showed me that there were 191 viruses on my computer

When I looked at the location then most of them were in the tempreroy directory (which I did not clean before running the virus scanner) Now the reason why I scanned my hard drive was that whenever I was working on computer, outlock express was comming up everytime and it was trying to connect somewhere. But because I never used outlock and I did not configure it before so I was giving me error each time it tried to connect. I think that was the cause of a virus so I scanned my system.

But now I don't know which one it was because I have some books on my hard drive and norton also finds the viruses in the html pages of those books.

I don't know what to do

Here is one of the log of the viruses:

    Scan type: Manual Scan
    Event: Virus Found!
    Virus name: VBS.Haptime.A@mm
    File: C:\WINDOWS\WEB\IEJIT.HTM
    Location: Quarantine
    Computer: OEMCOMPUTER
    User: Not-Logged-In
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine succeeded :
    Date found: Sun Aug 26 14:06:53 2001

What do I do with all these viruses and how do I get rid of them?

you have books on your hard drive, man, I bet you hard drive gets hot?? anyway just delete the books, I take it as those are E-Books. then it might be that there is a virus in the exe of that book. you should be able to scan them individually, if you right click on one of the books then you should have scan on that menu, McAffe does anyway.

formating is not the best way to prevent my system from viruses because I have about 7GB is data on my hard drive and everything in it is VERY important

I just noticed that norton deleted all the files that it the viruses in i lost all the ebooks in html format

it didn't say they were deleted, there should be a Quarantine folder somewhere so you can get them back.

I don't think it changed it, just rename the extension to what ever they were.

The files are renamed to some randomly choosed words like "45d35.vbn"

    Hmm...

I would suggest formatting, back up all your data (use CDR's or 7 GB worth of floppies) and "format C:"

And repartition. Some viruses stay in the master boot record, so do "fdisk /mbr" to clear it.

Because norton deleted all the files that had virus in them, I checked my system for virus again and it did not find any virus after that.

So will I need to format my hard drive or not?

    Another thing:

How do I install, remove outlook Express? I think that I can do that by using "Add/Remove programs" from control panel but I can't seem to find it in that list

Try doing an Add/Remove on IE.

right, outlook is part of IE. you can only install outlook form the add/remove on IE. you can also go back a configuration on IE but can't take outlook out.

i do it probably once every 4 months. I just hate all the build up of the junk files, and i love a new clean fast system.

Windows 98 and Me get bitrotten MUCH faster than Windows 2000. I can have Windows 2000 last 2/3 of a year before "cleaning" it.
