I've noticed that Guests often report posts. Do mods have a way of tracking them? I imagine it would be very irritating of guests just reported random posts just because they could. If that happens, maybe post reporting should be only for registered users?

How do you know who's reported posts? Do you get a message if yours is reported, or something?

Reminds me of 1984 from George Orwell.

    Wow
never saw that before and i object strongly to the existence of such a facility. I dont mind appearing as online in the main page but to have the forum track every movement i make in it is a bit much. I hope others protest against this intrusion of privacy. I don't see anything specific about it in the privacy statement but it strikes me as at least morally wrong.

I didn't know it existed until last week. It's quite interesting just watching the page open/refresh to see what people are up to. If you don't want to appear, make youself invisible

You need to be logged in to reply, or report posts.

Also, how do you know that guests report posts? (Or was it just a grammatical-typo?).

    Well ...

I think if John wants to track such things, that's his business. But such things should not be open for public viewing.

I suggest this particular feature be made 'moderators-only'.

Yeah but that is 2 different things dennis. You can be online and available for chit chat qtns or whatever but it doesnt mean that you should be able to be tracked thru the site. Imagine that happening on the wider net. "Dennis is not only online, right now he is embroiled in a fascinating tete a tete with Topsy Tina... " would u want that available? And ignore the silly example but u see what i and others mean? I would prefer to stay visible to the forum but not to have this tracking facility. Breach of privacy i say

Haha..people, this is very funny because...all the ads that we see on top of this forum pages can track personal information. All Those ads and many others in different sites can set cookies on your system, update as and when and can send back the info each time. If you are in vb-world and next, go to a porn site, they can conclude you are a programmer addicted to porn and can definitely make use of the info. If one of the sites gives your contact information to these ad companies...You are busted.

All they can do is cookie you and log your IP. Every site can do this, and if you use Ad-Aware, you can nuke the bad cookies and keep the good ones.

Bonker referenced an image in his signature that was an attachment. So everytime you see a post by Bonker, you view that attachment, and the download count increments.

And yes, I have nothing to hide. And it is obvious when I am online.

It doesn't know when you close a window. It just knows you go offline after a period of inactivity.

It just notes down the last page you requested. Even if if you have 100 windows open,it will list the last page requested.

    j/k Dennis.

    You privacy people are crazy!

So what if the general public or even just the admins of a site can track your path through their site? Does it really matter?

We walk into stores all the time with video cameras all over the place without complaining. Why are people complaining when we've got the equivalent on the web? If you walk into a store someplace, anybody in that store can see you and knows your path through the store. You don't care. Nobody complains. Life goes on. But when the same kind of thing happens on a website, it's suddenly an invasion pf privacy?!

Cause people like to look at porn on the web...if they got tracked, they'd get found out. Think of the potential damage to your marriage/job/social life!!!!

I don't think that everything about privacy should be given up because it is 'normal' or common or technologically possible. Surely everyone has a level of privacy that they feel comfortable with and while you may be comfortable with a low level of privacy that doesnt mean that others are comfortable with the same level. It is all too easy to say "hey this is how it is so live with it" but that is not a valid reason or even a valid argument.
I'm not saying that everything about privacy should be given up. I'm saying that I don't think the places you go on the web is really "private" and supposed to be unknown. Anything you type into the websites you go to is certainly private, but just the simple fact that you went there isn't, in my opinion.

I think our view of the web should be very similar to our view if the real world. If you get in your car and go someplace, it doesn't really matter if someone else sees you go there or sees you when you arrive where you're going. But I'm sure you'd care if someone else saw how much you spent at the store (someone other than the cashier), or what exactly you did at the bank or something like that.
