    Midgets, are you from America?

Can't get anything the right way round.

    Ass is a donkey,
    Arse is your backside.

Except in America where two concepts attached to similar sounding words totally eludes them.

but how anyone with the spelling generally found on this board can have the chutzpah to pontificate about pronounciation is beyond me.

I try very hard to make sure people understand exactly what I mean when I say something. I would hate to call one of my fellow Americans an ass and not have them understand that I've insulted them. They wouldn't know what an arse is so I say ASS! Of course, I think the extended middle finger when I say it also gives them a clue that I am not pleased.

Problem is, though - a donkey is a friendly, cuddly animal (so my daughter tells me), so if you call someone an ass, isn't there a chance that they'll think you're paying them a light compliment? There's no such misunderstanding with ARSE.

(Strangely, the Scottish pronunciation of arse - erse - is also another name for the Irish version of Gaelic. Make of that what you will...)
