    Unhappy GeForce or Radeon?

I know you gaming people are going to shout "GEFORCE3 64MB DDR!" but listen closely, as gaming is, by far, not the only priority.

I've been reconsidering my ATI Radeon All in Wonder 32MB DDR AGP video card. It seems like a good card...no it isn't as good for gaming as the Geforce but it does have VIVO, TV tuner, MPEG decoder. a TV tuner alone is about $100. Yet I could pick up that card for about $200.

I'm also THINKING of upgrading my old gateway to a Pentium 3 processor.

I'm saying, put the Geforce in the Gateway, as I won't be using the Gateway much anyway. And if I'm in the mood for any of the features on the ATI, I have to switch computers? Since i'd be using a KVM switch, no the AMD wouldn't be usable while the gateway was being used (duh) but i can't do anything else while gaming anyway.

My friend says I should put the Radeon in the Gateway, saying "match crap with crap".

However, it just doesn't make sense to me. Pass up TV tuning, video editing, and MPEG decoding on my AMD system just for better gaming?

I figure, why not get all the bells and whistles on my gateway and if i want some good gaming, put a Geforce 2 in the gateway and run some games.

He figures, the Geforce is so much better than the ATI for gaming (he is right about that), why waste it on a Gateway P3?

He also says that I shouldn't even be running the ATI in 2k, as the drivers are the worst.

    What should I do??? Help!

ATI sucks. Period. Their drivers are pieces of s***, trust me, under ANY OS. My TV tuner crashes in 2000 and locks up Windows Me.

    There's your answer.

Still, once R8500 comes out, the Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO will drop in price...and...

350mhz, but i plan to upgrade to an 800.

i was thinking of buying a geforce and installing a TV tuner, MPEG decoder, and VIVO, but that would take up 3 PCI slots.

Is there a GeForce with some stuff built in?

You could built an Athlon 1.4 GHz system for really cheap nowadays. An MPEG decoder shouldn't be needed.

I don't think a GeForce has a TV tuner built in. But get a good mobo and you won't have to worry about PCI slots.

with all Gayway issues aside, I could do this on my AMD:
AGP 1: Geforce 2 MX dual head (don't know which one)
    PCI 1: Network card
    PCI 2: Firewire card
    PCI 3: TV tuner
    PCI 4:
    PCI 5:
    PCI 6:

Still with possible expansion for USB 2.0, upcoming Firewire 2.0, and something else..

but i am still missing my MPEG decoding and my vivo.

    what to do? *confused*

Well, although I haven't used a radeon, I'm very happy with ATi cards...My first PC had a Rage Pro 4MB, and my current has a XPERT 2000 Pro 32MB, and I've never had any problems with either...

Filburt, are you sure your crashes aren't down to Windows ME and not ATi?

Windows Me may suck, but I'm sure it was because of the ATI drivers.

ATi are crap. I have a Rage Pro & whoever said the drivers are crap, is also right. I still can't get OpenGL support.

You can get GeForce cards with TV Out if that's what you want. Have a look at www.ahead-computers.com I think they've got some there.

I have a Rage Pro and it has openGL support, but I have the Rage Fury Pro if that is any difference.

and it doesn't even crash, skip, or jump. never had a p[roblem until I updated teh drivers and then it wouldn't work with my tv. so went back to the other updated ones and haven't had a problem since.

Does the ATI All in Wonder 32MB DDR AGP have some good OpenGL support? or does anyone know how it stacks up to a Geforce 2 MX 400 in 3dmark 2001?

My XPERT 2000 Pro (Based on the Rage 128 Chipset) has lovely OpenGL support, even thogh it's a fairly old card.

Voodoo was the greatest (sp?). I loved 3dfx.

I got an ATI Radeon 32M DDR. It is a great card. I dual boot between Win2k and Win98Se. ATI's drivers are excellent these days. I have no problems with this card.

I have a Radeon and I have only had one problem with it... Its too damn good for some old games (and some new ones too).. They have only just started to make games that are compatible with it... which is a pain in the arse. But I think that its one of the best..

The GeForce is also cool. (my flatmate has one). It is in the same boat as the Radeon..

Voodoo however is also very good... (our spare machine has an old Voodoo in it - thought it is running Linux so it probably doesn't get much use!)

So why settle for one when you can have all 3!!
