    I have an image at 24 bit color and I want it at 256 color.
    Any ideas?

    Saving the image in a different file format should do the trick, but obviously you will lose the clarity of the image.
    You didn't mention the actual image format, but if I remember rightly, .ico, .bmp and .gif are 256 colour image formats.
