Vent....
No names, no pack drill, I wanna vent something which I'm quite sure, has been vented before.
THIS BOARD IS A COMMUNITY !
Of late, though I may rightly be considered a 'minor' character, I have noticed that certain 'names' have been abusing people who they believe ask less than difficult questions. I don't think that's on at all.
Alot of people logging onto these boards do so as a last attempt, or need direction that cannot be sourced elsewhere.
It is the responsibility of anyone trying to answer someones question in technical areas to to treat that person and their question with the respect they would expect themselves.
Everyone F**Ks up with questions & answers alike. EVERYONE, nobody knows it all, this board's has all levels of entrants, some beginners, some gurus, some A**holes... what community does'nt ? Doesnt make slagging people off because we think we know better than them right. Does it.
Vent Over.

People will tend to answer you in a patient tone if you change your name. They get easily [b]pissed off[b] on seeing such a naughty name.

I was'nt making the point about myself, people have been gracious to me in the past, I was making a general point having respect for anybody brave enough to post a question.
ThinkTank: Sorry you fell my username is obtuse, it isn't meant to be, the 'FATBOY' bit relates to my current irritation over my less than slim figure, Pee is a nickname from my firstname Pete.

Shout...
Ok, take the point on the UPPERCASE...not intentional again...
It's always amused me, the meaning people gain from using UPPERCASE letters, am I able to change my User name ? I tried using getting into the profile and it said I did'nt have permission. If by consensus people feel either the name / and or the UPPERCASE are offensive I will change them if I can, but this is a shared PC and I dunno what gives with security on this board etc.
Back to the point though, it does make ya feel good when ya answer a question. Even if a million others answer the same one !
I just personally find it offensive when people ridicule the postee of a question. So wot if they don't know something, it's certainly not my place to judge or be condescending, there but for the grace.... is all I'm saying....

I was only kidding, FBP. Your name doesn't bother me in the least.
I agree that people shouldn't be picked on just because they don't know something, but there are more annoying problems that crop up here. The one that gets me the most is when someone posts an unclear question and, when they receive a reply that doesn't answer quite what they were after, the oringinal poster responds with "What, are you stupid?". I've seen that more than I've seen established members popping at a newbie.

Ego aGoGo....
Yeah, I've seen that too, this place really is about 'ego' to a degree ? As well as a genuine desire to help out ?
Answering with a 'course blah blah I know lots blah....' type answer which doesn't fit the question is a big symptom and one I'm acutely aware of, having been shot down before over...
also, people with the 'wot are u Fick' ? attitude are irritating...
but they get left to their own devices pretty quickly if people see those responses dontcha think ? I'd like to hope so anyway....It always amazes me, how little I know about most things in here...
Thats either VB is so diverse nowadays, or more simply put, I am Fick.....

I agree with this in principle, but one thing does kinda annoy me - when people ask questions they should be perfectly capable of answering themselves if they spend 5 minutes thinking about it. I've seen certain people post really complicated questions about stuff when their problems are down to a really simple problem caused by a fundamental misunderstanding of the material.
This mainly happens in the C++ forums actually, when people jump into Windows/DirectX programming without knowing the basics first.
Also when you answer a question like that and tell them it's a problem that isn't where they're expecting it to be, they just tell you "there's nothing wrong with that, that isn't the problem" when it blatantly is.

E-Z Life...
Yep another nail, another head......
Why do it, when it's easier to get others to do it for you. One caveat there tho' is, when you know it's been done before an it's possible it could save yer life if you got a snippette of code to 'plug' in rather than re-inventing the wheel (badly occasionally in my case)...... but indeed, its a case of a time-saver and being aware of the concept rather than jumping in feet first then arguing about it....
The ones that do kill me tho' are the ones that blatantly say
'I wanna do such'nsuch' Code only Please !...
As for the adventures into areas of development that people don't normally tread, I think that's really a symptom of the environment we're in......
For the simplest reason they don't know how experienced you may bei in an area, they may well disregard your help. But aint it 'oh-so-sweet' when you're proved right ?? ...ooops, there goes the Ego again.....

tis true but...
Again, the anonymity of such a board (leaving aside the usual suspects...) means that, somebody's little problem could well be their brick wall.... if your intuition is that they really ought to know the answer, then hey, silence is the loudest reply isn't it ? I suppose they ought not do that but it's E-Z Life.....
if you're replying to this:
Code only please !!!

C++ what u mean entirely....
I don't disagree with you at all. I'm familiar with C++, all I was trying to say was thet we don't know who has what skills and whether or not they know much about anything, other than from the question they post and what a little digging can unearth about the subject.
It's an easy life to ask a question knowing that a little 'brain' power would resolve it, but relying on someone else. But we dont know that that's why they posted the question other than sensing that fact by the way the question is phrased, in which case we can choose not to reply (as in the ones who say "code only please")... thassall I'm saying really..
Harry's point on the indignance shown by the 'thats not it' type of postee doesn't just apply to C++ its more general it applies to all the 'i know what i think i know' kinds too, whatever their discipline.
I think the board being the board in that respect means we have the choice to help out or not. Whether the guy's motives are sound for asking, or whether he knows what he should and is just pulling the wire, or is out of his depth and should go back to the books..... The simple gripe is that once we decide to help out, ridiculeing someone, or being clever or stroppy is just plain rude.

You can tell sometimes whether the person is capable of answering it themselves (or should be) from previous posts that person has made, if any.
