Tmp File Problem

When starting windows98 I receive following error:

RAD8935A.tmp missing.

I can't figure out which program needs that tmp file.
When I create a text file with that name the eroor message
displays that the file should be a script file.

I've checked the registry but find nothing.
I also looked in the starup but the only thing that starts
is msoffice and mcafee.

What else, besides reinstalling the pc, can I do to solve
this problem.

It would take forever, but search for all files on your hard drive that contain the text "rad8935a.tmp".

Also scan for viruses. Who konws? Can't hurt.

You have a poin there.
The PC belongs to a friend and he was so friendly
to open an attachment in his mail with a virus.
So I think he just deleted some parts and also
that specific file.
The virusscan gives nomore virusses but I think
that something has been damaged.
Searching for text is probably the last thing I can do.

I just hoped that somebody knows RAD....
Perhaps those letters rings a bell.

The exact message is following:

The titlebar shows : Registereditor


Message : Can not import c:\windows\system\rad8935A,
there was an error by opening the file.
Possibilty for a drive or filesystem error.

To be safe it seems to me that I better format the c-drive
and reinstall the pc.

The cause must be an virus.

No normal Windows machine would do that. Can you get into the GUI so you can run Norton Anti-Virus or something (get the latest signatures first)?

When I go to vbforums, the welcome should display my name, marex, but I'm getting another name.
It was solved yesterday, and now it's back again.
The strange thing is that it always give me the name flufke.
I'm starting to hate the name
I've checked the user and it's a new member.
I havent a clue how this is possible.

Your advice was to look in the cache, can you be more specific.

Have you used msconfig to check for programs run at startup? It should have a complete list, including items started from the registry.

It is my guess that the install of some software got messed up. Some installations require a system restart to finish up the install processing. In this case, they often put something in the registry or the startup folder which will fire up on the next system load. If the install gets terminated abnormally, a temp file might not be in place and that is what the probelm is.

There are several ways to cause programs to start when Windows loads. You might not have checked all possibilities.

I think msconfig knows how to find them all.

Problem solved.
Thanks Guv that msconfig was just what I needed.
Error was an older virusprogram that was manually
deleted instead of uinstalled.
