New part time work
Going to be starting some part time work (in addition to my full time job) at the sheriff's department technology division, specifically the communications division. Sprint is paying A LOT of money for every public safety department in the United States to shift their radio frequencies down 15Hz so that Sprint can have a larger section of the 800MHz band.
In comes me. My job is part time "extra help" as a Communications Technician I and I get to help edit thousands of radio template files so in 2 years we can reprogram all 26,000+ radios in the county. Sounds like fun eh?
Anyway. This is getting me one step closer to the type of job I want.

Speaking of the communications division... The burb I live in will be getting Text-to-911 in the near future. So when you're hiding in a closet you can text for help...
Wi-fi went down for five minutes, so I had to talk to my family....They seem like nice people.

Depends on how much work is involved. I take it the files contain all the trunked frequencies a certain radio (or group) can use? Sounds like a job that could be automated...

I am going to request only 1 day per week for the part time work. I am doing it mostly for experience and to get my foot in the door. Once a full time position opens up I will be able to slide right in.

Yeah NG911 (Next Generation 911) includes text-to-911. They want to be able to include photos and videos but that doesnt seem currently feasible. All major carriers currently support text-to-911, if your local PSAP does not support it, if you text 911 you get a bounce back message. Orange County has yet to implement it. But my department will probably have it by next year.

I dont think it can be automated. Each PD has their own separate template. And within each PD they may have several templates for different divisions. Also not every "channel" is getting a new frequency. There are too many variable to make it automated.

Seems like you might not want to let any potential employers see that quote.
I can't imagine squeezing much performance from an extra 15Hz of Bandwidth.

Re: New part time work
2 jobs is completely do-able. Its just how things are now-a-days that in order to survive we need to do more than 1 job.
I work 2 jobs and bust arse but its getting me into a position later on where I will be debt free and have all my cars paid off etc

Re: New part time work
I'm planning on buying a house in the next year. Having this extra income will help me out a lot when the times comes. Even working one day a week will be about an extra ~1000/month that could go directly toward my house fund.
More importantly its giving me experience for a full time position. The work they are going to have me doing is assigned to the level II or Senior level in this position class. Starting as a level I doing level II or senior work will only make me more likely to be accepted when a position opens later on.
