network guru's
Hi All
We have a client who has touchscreen machines running Win 98 on a network
The till application on these machines connects to a SQL server database to upload till transactions at the end of the day.
The problem is they keep losing the connection to the network.
One wierd thing is I was down at the client site a few weeks ago updating the program and the local database.
From my machine and other machines on the network I could see the all the directories on the root and trnsfer data to and from them.
When I went to the machine to run a new setup from the network the machine could not see the network.
Has anybody had similar problems or suggest anything as to why I can browse these machine over the network but cannot browse the network from the machine itself.
Thanks

windowsNT?
If your workgroup is set to be a domain, administrated by a WindowsNT PDC, then you need to be logged in to see any computers, athought in this case you can still enter the UNC to connect but it is not as pretty. Is this the case? you said "root" somewhere in there and that makes me think you have a Unix/Linux server, or do you not even have a server. Please report back with a few more details.
Hopefully this thread has helped you in someway

The domain is correct
When the machine is rebooted the network connection is renewed and it can go about it's business.
They just seems that every so often the machine drops off the network but only from the machines point of view.
It only happens every now and again that I can see it from another machine and other times I can not see it at all.
When it is rebooted I can see it on the network again and the machine can see the network again.

I've had the same problem with win98 and the only thing I could get to work was to reinstall win 98 since then no problems try searching microsofts knowledge base they have some info on it but for me the easest way was to reinstall win98 and alot less time consuming
