dflw, I take it you're a delta force fan ?

Anyway, I learned VB by programming simple games.
Well, thats a little bit of a lie.

First I played with making command buttons do things, then putting captions into labels, then how to move shapes and other controls, then I copped onto the whole way events and properties work in VB, and then I started writing my game.

The evolution of which can be found at http://www.coolground.com/plenderj/

I mucked around with VB getting it to do things, First Thing I wrote was an Excel Macro Virus (no payload, totally harmless) on 1995 because i read an Arcticle on Theoritical Word Document Virus, and they wondered how long before these start spreading. (the virus is still around, having successfully jumped 3 versions of Excel).

Wrote a couple of simple games, Mucked around with some sampl code, Wrote a few simple Multi-media apps, like Cd Players, sound Recorders etc, then went on and Did alot of Automation Programming (window systems, manlipating the windows enviroment directly)

I think i know almot everything in VB itself, and i know a fair few API, but Learning all the time. My final Uni Project starting in september is a Isometric Graphics Engine with a Simple Object interface so people can easily write games without worring about graphics code. (so the Uni can use it in a Game Logic Module, under there new Games Programming degree) and DirectX turned out to be ALOT easier than i thought.

If your the type who learns fast by doing, then start the game now.
Some Days, i just get this feeling that i'm helping to write dozens of Viruses...
