Question Blocking Websites Without Using Host File?

I'm currently working on a program which will block the users computer from viewing websites that contain Malware, Spyware, etc. on them. I do have a VBScript code that does overwrite the windows host file but once executed my Microsoft Security Essentials says that some program or virus is trying to alter windows host file or something around those lines.

My question is, is there any other way I can block these other websites without having this problem occur?

This is a somewhat futile pursuit. Are you seriously expecting to be able to determine the IP addresses of every single potentially hazardous website in the world? Because if you let one through you might as well let them all through! And editing the hosts file is a waste of time. It only takes Notepad to reverse any changes you might make. Windows has a multi-layered security system including parental controls which still requires being supplemented with anti-virus/malware screening from Security Essentials or a third party program. If you think you're going to do a better job with a single layer 'hack' of the sort you propose, you really haven't been paying attention.

Re: Blocking Websites Without Using Host File?

I understand what you're saying, but at the same time I do have a list of over 5000 malicious sites and ad links in which most websites use which can cause Phishing. Having 5000 sites blocked, in my eyes, is better than not having any of them blocked at all. But everyone does have there own opinion. No I don't plan on doing better than Microsoft Security Essentials. The thing is I don't want to use the host file because I know how it can easily edited or cracked by a 3rd party (malicious software or someone who takes over your computer). So in your opinion should I just scratch the idea?
