What if the explanation is 'because you are American. and your values must be destroyed.' ?

The reality of the world is that there are groups that want to destroy another group, just because of who they are (both sides). This is the nature of conflict, and we are seeing some of the extremes, today. There are (some) which believe there is a peaceful answer to every conflict, no matter the scale. This, I believe is hubris. Conflict resolution relies on a common ground, or set of rules. A lot of conflicts, by definition, exist because each party is operating under a different set of rules, and those rules are the core.

Sure. I have no problem with any of that, but when you list the enemies of America, Chechnya isn't exactly high up on the list. My reaction is probably similar to that of Darius after the burning of Sardis (which ultimately resulted in the battle of Marathon): Who???

If that is his reason, I'd still like to hear it. With some groups one could pretty much assume that was the reason, but Chechens? Not so much.

If you've seen the raw cell phone video of the Texas explosion it's shocking to say the least. And I can sympathize with the kid you can hear freaking out. When I was 6 a gasoline distributor directly across the train tracks from our apartment was destroyed in a series of explosions that blew out every window on two sides of our building. I had nightmares for years about that. But that was nothing compared to this.

They were Chechen, noy Czech! That's like confusing Austria with Australia. If Hitler had been Australian the second world war would have involved a lot more tinnies (and ThEiMp would probably have got involved somehow).

It's notable that Chechen are mostly islamic and one of these guys had made comments about how he had no US freinds because they all drank and were dissrespectful so it's possible this was religiously inspired. Traditionally Chechen animosity has been directed towards Russia, though, so directing it toward the US seems surprising. I still think these guys are probably "lone nutters" (although not quite lone as it turns out) rather than being part of any terrorist organisation but we'll probably start to get a better picture in the coming weeks as they question the guy they caught alive.

    Sydney has an opera house
    Opera was invented in Austria
    Therefore, Sydney is in Austria.
