    Question Check for new version

I want my application to check for new versions of itself by looking for the a file on the net, and reading its contents...

Anyone have any pointers on how to go about doing this?

    Thanks!

Use the winsock control to connect to a webserver and request the file.

Well its not that the winsock control wont allow the connection to be proxied, you just have to do the programming yourself

the next one which will replace our PDC will be the same but double, but with only 2 HDDs as we dont need space on it.

You shouldnt have gotten P-III Xeons, you should have just gone for Xeons. The newer Xeon's have dropped the Pentium prefix.

And I would imagine that a P4 would be faster than a xeon, even for server tasks .......... also, an itanium would be nice

I though you'd of gone to 2000 if you're getting a new server.

It costs alot to licence for our users, And we dont need 2000 anyways.... we do have 2000 server machines but they are running IIS and some scanning services, and the other is a SQL server which is just setting up now

Well in Ireland here, if you ring microsoft (+353 1 4502113) and say you want to buy licenses etc. they tell you to ask for Jamie in everyman computers.

    Tada moi

So if you want a good price on licenses, just let me know

50 concurrent users under what application ?
Do you have a sample price for me to beat ?

And do you want to add 50 users to this server application, or do you want a price on a server application with 50 users ?

    Code:
    CAL = Client Access License
A license required for each client that will be accessing the server

    Windows 2000 Server w/25 CALs 1670.00
    Windows 2000 Additional CALs 30.00

    Exchange Server 2000 Standard w/25 CALs 1290.00
Exchange Server 2000 Additional CALs 68.00
Now obviously there's a little room for negotiation, and its also assuming you're not upgrading. Let me know what you think...
Prices are ex-VAT and in IEP also.

    I know what CAL is

Well at the momemt we have NT4.5 SBS Backoffice with 45 CAL's

We have Exchange server 4.5 which is with SBS

In that case, I'd do this :

    Code:
    BackOffice SBS 2000 Upgrade 705.00
BackOffice SBS 2000 Upgrade CALs 5 Pack 115.00
So you'd upgrade the server, and you would also have to upgrade you CALs..

Okay well in two months the prices might be off the wall.
But if you're ever getting licensing quotes, get a quote off me too, and I will undercut your other quotes.

Well they're totally changing their licensing from the start of october. There wont be any upgrades allowed.

You'll have to buy full products from that time forth.

    Oh right.
Well here's something you might be interested in.

All microsoft licenses are backwards compatible.
So a 2000 server licenses covers nt server, and an office xp licesnes covers office 97.

So you can buy your SBS 2000 licenses now, and they will cover you for any additional SBS4.5 things you need, and then when you want to start using SBS2000, you buy the media kit for £35.00, and the licenses will cover that too.

Well ya know, a few months down the line you'll be paying a number of times the current price just for the same products !

I will undercut any price you have.
All resellers have to buy off the same distribution channel, so if you tell me what you've been quoted, I'll do it cheaper !

I can requote you on the spot.
