Wink Ok prove to me the earth is not flat

Just finished an interesting articule about God, i.e he don't exist because it is impossible to prove that he/she/it exists. Applying the same logic it would equally be impossible to prove that the earth is round.

Think about it, what actually proof is there that the earth is not flat. Pictures from space. So you believe in what space agencies are telling you? etc.

well if the sun come up on one side and then it goes down the other side then we must have two suns. because by the time it took the first sun to reach the edge the other sun would have to be rising up the other side.

Ok, so if the earth is flat, that is to say that gravity does not eminate from a infinitismally small point, but rather equally from a plane? And it only affects what is exactly perpendicular to it?

Stop me if I'm not making sense

Come, come. That's a simple proof! Everyone knows a flat earth is inhabited by "Women from Planet Playtex."

    *Looks about* Sees none.

Ergo, the world is not flat!

    Jethro:

    Flat Earth:
The moon only reflects light and doesn't shine by itself correct?
If you watch the moon for a while you'll see it's different phases. The only explanation that some parts of moon don't shine most of the time, is that it only reflects and we only see the part that is currently reached by the light of the sun.

    This parts striaght from aristotle:
Aristotle explained that northbound travelers observe the stars near the north celestial pole to be higher in the sky than is observed at home, and different stars pass throulh the zenith. Conversely, when one travels to more southern latitudes the stars near the north celestial pole are seen lower in the sky, and some stars that are never above the horizon at home are seen to rise and move across the southern sky. The only possible explanation is that the travelers' horizons had tipped to the north or south, respectively, which indicates that they must have moved over a curved surface of the earth....he also advanced a theoretical argument that material falling to a center would take on a spherical shape - an idea consistent with the gravitational theory of Newton two millennia later

    That is a great surprise!

My summer school teacher asked the same question!

    Here is the correct answer:

    Example:

When you are driving on the road. If you are far away from a hill, you only see the top of that hill but as you keep going near it, you start seeing the bottom of that hill.

I hope that prives the point that Earth is round!

Or you could argue that when I phone my brother in Scotland he is always 7 hours ahead of us daylight wise, therefore, if the sun was directly above him at mid-day we would be able to see it from Canada, yet we can't therefore the earth must be curved or he must be on a different planet.

Or he could be lying, which thinking about it is not that far out of the question.

Okay so how about this. I can get on a plane at midday in Scotland, Fly for 8 hours to Canada and it's still approx mid-day...... unless they have invented a time machine, then this would only be explained by a non-flat earth (hell it might be cuboid for all I know)!

Sorry, but I have to go with the Earth is round idea because some old Greek guy (Aristotle?) got some Egyptians to dig a couple of wells and measure the distance between them and the shadow that falls on the bottom... and well... you get the idea.

I'm sorry, but what was the method they used to try to prove god that would work here? Digging holes?

Lol what you're all ignoring is that countless poeple have sailed around the world....And no they didnt fall of the edge. Besides...space agencies dont have the motivation nor the means to devieve the whole damn world.

The world could still be flat and be like the PacMan board, with wraps. If you go off in one direction, you enter again in the other direction.

But, there is that problem with the holes again. Which, if you had a single point of gravity somewhere behind the flat Earth, then you would be deceived when you dig the holes.

Warps huh. God created up in his own image, man! That probably means that he was lazy just like us, which in addition to explaining why the world is screwed up, also explains why the world is a sphere. I mean why bother with all that warp crap if you can just make the world round.

Heh... like there is a god. And even if there is, if he can create the universe, create man, and resurrect the Mesiah, making wraps is easy.

The hard part was training those four elephants, I'm sure.

Yeah, but I'm sure training A'Tuin was not a problem.

    "Okay, go."

'Course, if we were on disc, then we would see the sun rise at different places. Instead of SE and a little less SE, it would be E then S then W then N then E again.

Exactly, you can't prove that there are no unicorns. You also can't prove that we aren't on a disc. It is possible that no one has climbed over the rim, yet. It is also possible that someone has, and you can't prove that he didn't.

So you can't prove that no one rode a unicorn over the edge.

Wait... you are not an "untainted young woman". You've been in VB World for way too long.

And what would the four elephants stand on?

Occam's Razor Applied Further: Is it simpler to believe there are four elephants standing in space holding the disc on their backs, or that there are four elephants standing on a great turtle while holding the disc on their backs.

I think it would be pretty silly to have four elephants floating in space.

    Ciberthug:

So if the earth was flat and i lived right on the edge according to you there's this wrap.
If i stepped to my left and put half of me over the edge and half not.

i should be able to look to my right, right to the other edge and see my other half???

Still doesnt explain why the moon has phases?
Also my 2nd explanation cant be stuffed re-typing it.

Another explanation was noted by Pythagoras:
Pythagoras noted that the shadow of the Earth falling on the Moon during a lunar eclipse was always curved and the amount of the curvature was always the same. The only object that always casts a circular shadow regardless of its orientation is a sphere.

Give it up Beacon...you cant convince them of something they dont want to believe. Of course you're right...but thats not enough 4 them.

Dont mean to change the topic...but what do you all think bout all that stuff about the americans NEVER landing on the moon at all and all that being a hoax to fool the Soviets?? Total BS or is there some merit in it?

Personally I dont think they could hide something as big as that.

I don't think Jethro really believes that the earth is flat. I think he's just trying to prove that it's hard to prove that the earth isn't flat. It seems that he failed at that.

Remember when you (Beacon) were saying that you were dead and challenged me to prove otherwise? (I'd say I did a good enough job ) I think Jethro's doing something like that.
