Search is buggy and produces errors

From time to time I have used the search here and its the only part of the forum that doesn't work, too many people tell me to use the search, well here is me coming back after all this time and telling you to fix the search so it does work. Doesn't matter what I look for, just lags out and times out. I have tried other computers and net connections and still the same issue.

I ran three searches last night and they all worked fine... there are some times when the site as a whole does have performance issues... at the same time, it depends on what you searched for too...

I don't find the search quite as clear as it used to be, but I have found that it works well....once you get past a couple little quirks. The first quirk is that there are two tabs: Search Multiple Content Type and Search Single Content Type. The former is selected by default and I have no idea what it is supposed to do, but I've never gotten anything useful out of it. The Search Single Content Type is the one that always works for me, but even there you have to pay attention to a few caveats (unless they have changed):

    1) Don't bother searching for anything shorter than four characters. Therefore, TCP, UDP, WPF, and all other TLAs won't work.

    2) There are two search buttons on the form. If you choose any of the Additional Options, I believe you HAVE to use the Search button in that section, and not the search button in the Search In section.
