How to create a Chat program on LAN

Hi I am waheed Rafiq from UK I am seeking for some depress help with VB 6 I am trying to create a LAN program a basic chat room , I just don't know where to start and how to go about it could you help me.

I have tried to use winsock but i am not sure wheather you can use it on LAN network , i have try it but i am getting no where. could someone help me please.
