-- Sacofjoea with more of your common computing problems --

Yes, I am back here with yet another set of problems!

    - Todays Problem: After installing a HD I was running win2k only on the system. I tried to install 98 but I had to boot up from the CD and for some reason, whenever I booted from the CD, the Drive Letters changed. Is there a way to set them fixed for good. (ex/ my C drive was now D drive and my D drive was now my G drive... so in the end I ended up installing to the same drive as 2k)

    - Next on the list: I formatted that, but just worried it will resurface when I try to reinsall a second OS again. AND now, for the dusey (if thats how you spell it) - I installed 98 back on my system and for some really odd reason, whenever I try to boot normally, it gives me the "Invalid System Disk" error. Yet when I put in my Win 98 CD, it gives me the option to boot from HD or ROM (i pick HD) and it goes fine. No idear what to do with that...

Please submit answer in the form of a question - or just in your own simple format.

    Thanks all

oh crap, what did you do now?? step back from the computer son, we don't want you to get hurt

the invalid system disk means that you didn't fdisked it right. or it doesn't have the proper files on it to boot. but if it was me I would just use one OS, but that is me. if it is anything like dual booting win98 and NT I think you have to install 2K first then win98. what I did was make my c drive about 200Mb and then made D drive my NT partition and E my win98 partition. Now Nt puts files in C drive to make it dual boot. don't know if this will help but I have not that much experience with 2K (yet).

well that is a big question. you need the ini files (system.ini, win.ini, protocol.ini, maybe config.sys and autoexec.bat)
also you need a lot more VxD files and the exe files to make it boot. why do you ask?

You can change removable drive letter assignments, but not fixed drives.

See Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager tab -> Find device (e.g. CD) -> Properties -> Settings -> Reserved Drive Letters

To set CD to J: for example, set both Start and End to J:

I would start over if you get an invalid system disk error. it doesn't nessisarily mean that windows is messed up. and personally I wouldn't use winme for anything. all it is is a glorified win98se make. you can download evey new feature that winMe came with and make win98se trhe same without the screwed up kernel, that is just me .02 cents

also in Win2K you can change the drive letter on hard drives.

well, i formatted all drives, and now it works fine... I have 2k as well as ME installed, I woudl install 98, but During the brief day that I had it, yesterday, I realized why i got rid of it. Once ME crashes, which im sure will be within a few months with some invalid file or something, I will just install over it as I usually do. But that is something to look forward to

    - End of Question

    Thanks All,
    - Andre
