Thread: Creating Registry Keys

    Hi Team

I create a registry keys using VB6 code as follows:

    CreateRegKey = (RegCreateKeyEx(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, "Software\Solution 5\DebtManager", 0, NewSubKey, 0, KEY_ALL_ACCESS, SA, phkResult, Create) = ERROR_SUCCESS)

The result is a DWORD value. What do I change to get it to create a String?

Er...why do you want it to return a string? RegCreateKeyEx returns either 0 or a handle to an opened registry key. There's no valid data for it to have in a string.

What is it you're trying to accomplish?

Why not use SaveSetting() and GetSetting()

all is handled by VB no fuss!

Because VB jams them under "VB and VBA Program Settings" which is about as unprofessional-looking as it gets .

    Try the following:
    Code:
Public Sub SaveSettingEx(HKEY As Long, sPath As String, sValue As String, sData As String)
        Dim KeyHand As Long
        Call RegCreateKey(HKEY, sPath, KeyHand)
        Call RegSetValueEx(KeyHand&, sValue, 0, REG_SZ, ByVal sData, Len(sData))
        Call RegCloseKey(KeyHand&)
    End Sub
    Usage:
    Code:
    SaveSettingEx HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, "MyPath", "MyValue", "MyData"

Or use the following. Place it in a Module
    Code:

You like that piece of code, don't you Megatron? (One suggestion - some people need to save numbers at some point )

No doubt... as a VB newbie, I spent waaay too long trying to enter a DWORD correctly into the registry with Megatron's code.

Parksie- I had your module up and running from your example in 15 minutes, successfully making the following changes to a users machine in order to 'lock it down' so to speak... Thanks for the help!
