    Arrow DVI frame capture hardware

    Guys,

I need something that will let me capture frames from a DVI video source (a headless computer, to be precise) and store them to disk or memory. I don't need to record or stream video, just get single frames in a bitmap (or non-lossy compressed) format. Sizes will be typical desktop screen resolutions. Disk/memory usage is not a concern.

Edit: I'd prefer a PCIe card, but a USB unit would do.

The ideal hardware seems to fall under the category of a "frame grabber", but these are outrageously expensive. On the other hand, HDMI video capture cards are cheap, but these seem to be intended for recording video and so I'm not sure I can get pixel-perfect frames out of them.

    Any advice would be great.

if it's a headless computer, what's stopping you from doing this with software? It seems like it would be simple to do a screen capture and send to a network folder somewhere.

I like doing things the hard way.

No, I can't install anything on the computer to broadcast the screen. It has to be a hardware solution.

Looks like an SEO dump. The products listed there are the "outrageously expensive" ones I mentioned...

you could probably find one cheaper by finding one that captures hdmi. The adapter cable can be had for about $10. I don't know how much the items you looked up cost, but here's one under $200

That's not bad considering. I paid $100 for one of my tuner cards.
