    Router suggestions

Not sure where to post this so it is going here.

I need to think about replacing my home router, right now I have a Linksys E2500. It is giving me issues seting up restrictions. What I want to do is to be able to set restrictions based on days of the week and and sites to block. This router will let me disable all access on specified time but to just to specified web sites.

Any one have any ideas on how to accomplish on this router or any other router that might support the type of restrictions I want to impliment?

    Thanks

    Gary

I have a Netgear WGR614. Actually I have three of them in various locations and I'm quite happy with how they work. They seem to be able to do what you're after. I'll upload screenshots in a few minutes.

    Re: Router suggestions

    Here we go.

Site blocking. Allows you to enter domain names for sites to block. Can be blocked always or per Schedule. And you're able to have an exclusion for one IP that will still be allowed to access these sites.

Service blocking, main screen allows Always or Per Schedule options. This shot shows options when adding a new service to block.

And finally these are the scheduling options. You can select all days of the week or specific ones, and entire day or specific single period in the day. Only one whole period, not multiple separate ones, and only one setting for all selected days.

    Hope this helps.

I have a couple of Netgear WRGXXX (I forget the exact model) and they do that as well... And since I have static IPs for all the computers on the network, it's even possible to stop an individual component ... I think ... I've seen the block options, but never had any reason to put it to use.

I do that too. Address reservation in the DHCP so each device always gets assigned the same IP.

Garry, the router also has QoS settings where you can assign different priority levels to different services, LAN ports, applications/games or machines (based on MAC) if that's something you might find useful.

I've had good experience with the Netgear WNDR3800, and I've also heard good stuff about the previous model, WNDR3700. Just checked the router interface, and it can do all the blocking you need on whatever schedule you select.

If you are chucking your current router there would be no harm in trying to flash it with some alternative firmware first.

    I like dd-wrt.

I've got a Linksys WRT54G and have always hated their router UI, so I flashed mine with DD-WRT v2.4 a couple of years ago and haven't had any problems since, I actually have more options available now.

I checked their compatibility database and yours is listed: http://www.dd-wrt.com
Currently using VS 2015 Enterprise on Win10 Enterprise x64.
