CMS - Content Management System - is a generic term and thus can be broadly applied to any sort of web application that does what its name describes: facilitates the management of content on a site. Yes, Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal all do this, and can be called CMS.
There is no specific development pattern, but commonalities include forms for content input and database tables for its storage.

Hi,

I think the main two activities that you could do under a CMS would be(correct me if I am wrong):
- Plugin development for that CMS
- Theme development for a CMS
