I heard Google was going to shut down in response to Congress's SOPA. I can still access Google, so I don't think that's true. If it is, I just might switch my email and my default search engine.

I Have to say I agree with OhGreen, that is a very stupid reason to change, But the message would hit harder if google did a blackout as well, and I was kind of hoping they would.

I know of a whole slew of sites that are partly or completely locked out today as a protest to the two bills. It's making things a little more difficult than normal, but that's the whole point.

Gmail, G+ and Google search all work fine for me so at least we still have that, but (imho) it would be nice if google locked out their US search servers today, that would hit just about everyone in congress and the senate pretty hard, maybe they'd all realize that if the bills were passed, they'd all lose their precious google searching too.

I think the blacked out doodle is appropriate for Google's participation. A shut down of their services would be irresponsible and potentially counter-productive to the cause.

Also, Wikipedia is a non-profit. Google has responsibility to share holders not just customers. A day of Google profits is A LOT of money.

I'm more amused by people thinking google would contemplate a 24 hour shutdown, it might just highlight not everyone on the web actually uses google Facebook would have more of an impact as about 90% of the non-technical, non-web savvy, people use it.

I think we will find that, after all this childish whining dies down, that it is perfectly possible to live without Google, Wikipedia, Facebook and the internet.

I understand this is fairly pedantic, and that a lot of people do make their living via the internet, but doesn't all this upitiness regarding the 'omg the interwebs will go away!' make one realize that it's not a good idea to focus all ones skills to be reliant upon a single technology?

As a programmer GOOGLE has become a "required" resource in doing R&D. I would have absolutely no way to create the software I do without that resource.

Back in my mainframe days we purchased $3000.00 two-dozen-binder manuals from the the hardward manufacturer to do our apps...

Now it's all google searches for R&D...

Wikipedia is a good source of information as well - not as "required" for sure...

Facebook is a waste of time and has no place in a developers worlds - if you want to make business connections use LinkedIn
