    What Tools are Developers Using?

    The Developer's Toolkit is an infographic that shows the top tools being used by developers. The information based in this infographic is based on a survey of 500 developers around the world that was conducted by BestVendor. More importantly, this survey targeted developers in companies with less than 100 people.

    In reviewing these statistics, I see a few things that seem questionable. Regardless, it is always interesting to see numbers. Do you think the rankings are accurate? Do you see things that seem to be missing?

    I'd like to see how they determined the industry... "Professional Services?" What does that mean? It's a very broad term. And how is it different from "Technology"? One huge glaring hole: Platform. A lot of the top items are cross platform or web-based... which makes me wonder how many of those companies are Apple-platform users. Hmmm ... "Design and Creative" professionals... sounds like graphic designers... people concerned with image... not (code) developers. I wouldn't be surprised if they surveyed 180 code monkeys, they got a completely different result.

    Also, 180 people hardly seems representative of the industry at large.

    Yep, these numbers look skewed enough to be entirely phoney. Amazon doesn't even do Web Hosting per se.

    And it seems everyone who sits in an office is a "developer" these days. In the average company under 100 people "developer" probably means "boss's nephew writing Excel macros."

    In one company I worked for in 2000, one of the developers on the team was completing class assignments for the boss' daughter.
