I have a very limited knowledge in programming, my only experience being a class on COBOL I took at CHUBB, I was wondering what was the best way to go about learning Visual Basic in order to find work in the field in the immediate future. Right now I'm looking at cerification courses that are twice a week for 4 months, or should I teach myself, and get certified on my own, do I need certification? If I do need it which certification? And knowing just Visual Basic on it's own, is that enough to get a job? I'm lost and need some advice!!!!

I have not personally taken any classes in Visual Basic, but I can offer you this bit of advice. In order to be a good Visual Basic programmer, you need to be able to predict everything that a person can do to your application to mess it up, because people will cause errors if you don't trap them all. That has been the biggest challenge for me, and none of the books I have, have taught me well in that area. For that reason I would recommend a class as a good starting point. Once you have a very good foundation, then I would be comfortable venturing out on my own to learn from books and places like this. Again that is just my experience, and what I have run into. I know that the classes can get quite expensive. Good Luck

And don't forget that most VB jobs (about 80%) are database related
