    Thanks folks

I joined this forum nearly 5 years ago as very much a hobbyist programmer.

My confidence grew as a result of this community and this year I decided to go for a career change and try to get some work as a professional software developer/engineer.

I've applied for loads of jobs and not got a look in at any, I have no programming qualifications. Following advice from one of the members here I started to look for voluntary work.

Well, I found somewhere to volunteer. The coding is really interesting for me, mainly low level image processing. They like what I have done, I can apparently 'bring something to the table' and they have given me a decently paid job.

Thanks folks, I would not have got here without you.

Pretty soon you'll be retiring. That will make you pastureized Milk.

I followed something of a similar track, except that I started coding at my job, and kept at it until I ended up in an actual programming job.

Lucky you found someone that was willing to take a risk, calculated or otherwise. I lucked out in a similar manner & have been a "professional" coder now for 10 years; though I've been coding for nearly 25

    Re: Thanks folks

I been coding since I was 10 years old. Starting with Amiga Basic in the hopes of making my own video games cause I loved em so much. Then once in awhile Apple ][c basic. Then 5 years later when I was 15 I learned VB4. Was making some killer games in class while others were still learning if statements, for loops, and objects XD. And stuck with VB ever since. Had VB5 for awhile as others know then I snagged me a college copy of VB6 and VB.Net 2005 which was issued to students for free in the computer lab. Then I got VB.NET 2008 Express edition. Learned a bunch of C and C++ in between but my strong point is still in VB due to my years of experience. So 20 years of coding. o.O god I feel old.....

I got into coding because I knew how to type. My very first job was as a mainframe data input operator....the only qualification for that job was to be a fast, accurate, typist.

    Excellent stuff, Congratulation Mate!

It didn't take you long did it, when did they offer you the job?

Three weeks before the sit down with the boss. I was lucky in that they threw me at a project that involved things I've spent a lot of time playing with in the past so I was up to speed pretty much straight away and I could impress with what I did.

It has all gone a bit c++ but that suits me.

1984 was when I got the coding bug so it has only taken 27 years (admittedly off and on) to get some work out of it :/
