Re: Power of smell
I can see the issues but I don't think they are meant for extended use, let alone re-use a second day. This climber I know usually has multiple pairs with him and probably even changes them more than once a day.
I thought hikers tended to use them as a liner inside a thicker sock, but I only hike fairly casually myself.

Re: Power of smell
Yeah, that's what I have heard. I'm always open to changing my habits if something better comes along, and I had been hearing that wearing polypro liner socks was the proper attire. I think those stories were from casual hikers, not people who go for a month or more at a time. I haven't done any surveys to see whether those socks work better for other people, but in my case, the answer was pretty clear: They are downright dangerous to my health. They might work great for shorter trips where washing is a viable option. Rinsing with stream water wasn't sufficient, for me.
My usual boring signature: Nothing
